WE REMOVED FCT FROM THE TREASURY SINGLE ACCOUNT TO SPEED UP DEVELOPMENT – PRESIDENT TINUBU

WE REMOVED FCT FROM THE TREASURY SINGLE ACCOUNT TO SPEED UP DEVELOPMENT – PRESIDENT TINUBU

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu explained on Sunday in Abuja that his administration removed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) to expedite development and enhance resident participation in governance.
.
The President, who received FCT residents at the Presidential Villa for Sallah homage, said the bureaucracy associated with the TSA was hampering infrastructure growth in the capital city and had to be reviewed for impact and progress.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, led the residents during the homage.

President Tinubu highlighted that freeing the FCT from TSA restrictions has swiftly catalysed infrastructure improvements, enhanced healthcare services, and increased security measures.

"I remember the day that the FCT Minister came to meet me, and he said, please take us out of the problem of the TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more. I said show me what you are about to do, and he presented his thinking and belief.

"And everything started changing rapidly. I started seeing the opening up of the rural areas by the FCT, the resuscitation of abandoned projects, and the completion of the Vice President's official residence that was abandoned for years. The FCT rehabilitated health care centres, upgraded facilities for school children, and provided furniture.

President Tinubu thanked the FCT Minister for proving that liberation from the bureaucracy was necessary and for restructuring the FCT public service so that civil servants could aspire to higher positions and provide leadership.

"We wouldn't have been able to open our mouths to celebrate if not because of the progressive ideas you brought to FCT. We can now celebrate the innovative ideas brought to the FCT," President Tinubu said.

President Tinubu encouraged FCT residents and other Nigerians to look beyond ethnic and religious colourations in their leadership choices and focus more on results.

"Today, we live in peace, and security is improving. Hunger is coming down. Food prices are lowering. We can go to the market and do business. And our diversity and belief in ourselves are becoming stronger.

"We are not looking for magic. We are looking for results. We are looking for comfort. We are praying for good health. We are looking for someone who cares," the President noted.

"The job is not just about Wike or me, but everyone. Nyesom Wike is proving the diversity of Nigeria. He strengthened that diversity to develop prosperity, showing us that we are all members of one family, living together in the same house, in different rooms, and under one roof," the President said.

President Tinubu urged more tolerance, broadmindedness and patriotism.
"All I appeal for is tolerance, which has brought us this far. We have learnt some lessons from Ramadan. May the lessons continue to be with us," he said.

The FCT minister thanked the President for hosting the residents in the State House.

"This visit marks a historic moment as it is the first time the FCT residents can extend our greetings and best wishes to you in person during this blessed period. We are genuinely delighted to be here".

Wike pledged his loyalty to the President and committed himself to developing the capital city, assuring that the FCT would soon complete many projects.

"Despite our varied backgrounds, we are united in our unwavering support for your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda," he added.

The Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, attended the ceremony.

The FCT delegation included members of the National Assembly, judiciary, religious and traditional leaders, security chiefs and women and youth groups.

"Pregnant women should receive the Tetanus-Diphtheria (Td) vaccine during antenatal care."

She added, "Maintain good personal hygiene, including regular handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding sharing personal items."

The motion highlighted the fraudulent activities of fake real estate agents and some licensed developers, who deceive accommodation seekers, falsely advertise properties, collect multiple payments on a single rental unit, and disappear after receiving money.

Despite last Government intervention, exploitative practices in the real estate sector have continued, creating further challenges for residents and property buyers in Oyo State.

Beyond fraudulent rental transactions, house rent fees have increased drastically, often without any improvement in housing quality, infrastructure, or basic amenities. Agents now charge outrageous facilitation fees, sometimes higher than the rent itself, making housing difficult to afford for many residents. These unregulated activities have left many tenants struggling to secure decent accommodation in the state.

Some estate developers have imposed monopolistic restrictions on land buyers, insisting that only their affiliated engineers and contractors can handle construction projects on their estates. This practice limits buyers' freedom to develop their properties independently, inflates construction costs, and forces individuals into an unfair contractual system controlled by developers.

Even when buyers present certified engineers who meet all necessary qualifications, they are still denied permission to carry out their own construction, violating the fundamental rights of landowners.

These exploitative practices have led to widespread public complaints, as innocent investors and tenants are trapped in unfair agreements that limit their financial freedom. Many landlords also refuse to issue tenancy agreements, leaving renters without legal protection.

If urgent measures are not taken, the housing crisis will escalate, and investor confidence in the real estate sector will decline.

Oyo State must take decisive steps to regulate land sales, property rentals, and developer activities to ensure that the rights of residents and investors are protected.

The House resolve to urge the Executive Arm of Government through the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Real Properties Protection Agency to:

i. to register all real estate agents and developers in the state, maintain a database of properties, and monitor land sales, rental agreements, and estate development activities.

ii. ensure that landowners are given the freedom to engage any licensed engineer or contractor of their choice, rather than being forced to use developers’ affiliated professionals.

iii. regulate house rent increases and prohibit real estate agents from imposing excessive fees beyond legally permitted charges.

v. introduce a verification process for real estate advertisements to prevent misleading promotions that falsely portray undeveloped land as prime locations.

Oyo Lawmaker Moves Motion to Strengthen Real Estate Regulations

Oyo Lawmaker Moves Motion to Strengthen Real Estate Regulations
In a bid to curb fraudulent practices and protect residents and investors, Hon. Abiodun Babalola, representing Ibadan North-East 1, has moved a motion at the Oyo State House of Assembly to strengthen regulations on real estate practices.

The motion, which was presented on the floor of the House, highlights the persistent challenges faced by residents and property buyers in Oyo State due to exploitative practices in the real estate sector. Despite a previous motion moved in February 2024, the issues persist, with fake real estate agents and licensed developers deceiving accommodation seekers, falsely advertising properties, and collecting multiple payments on single rental units.

Key Issues Raised

- Fraudulent Rental Transactions: The motion notes that house rent fees have increased drastically without improvements in housing quality, infrastructure, or basic amenities.
- Monopolistic Restrictions: Estate developers have imposed restrictions on land buyers, forcing them to use affiliated engineers and contractors, limiting their freedom to develop properties independently.
- Lack of Regulation: The absence of strict real estate regulations has led to growing public complaints, with unsuspecting property buyers and tenants falling victim to fraudulent practices.

Proposed Solutions

To address these issues, the motion resolves to:

1. Register Real Estate Agents and Developers: The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Real Properties Protection Agency should register all real estate agents and developers, maintain a database of properties, and monitor land sales, rental agreements, and estate development activities.
2. Ensure Freedom to Engage Licensed Professionals: Landowners should be given the freedom to engage any licensed engineer or contractor of their choice.
3. Regulate House Rent Increases: The government should regulate house rent increases and prohibit real estate agents from imposing excessive fees.
4. Verify Real Estate Advertisements: A verification process should be introduced to prevent misleading promotions.

The motion urges the Executive Arm of Government to take decisive steps to enforce compliance and protect the rights of residents and investors in Oyo State.

Reps Members Got N7.6Million Each As ‘Sallah Gesture,’ Not Bribe For Tinubu’s Emergency Rule In Rivers, Betara Confirms To Journalist

Reps Members Got N7.6Million Each As ‘Sallah Gesture,’ Not Bribe For Tinubu’s Emergency Rule In Rivers, Betara Confirms To Journalist
Fresh details have emerged regarding the controversial cash payments made to Nigerian lawmakers amid President Bola Tinubu’s push for a state of emergency in Rivers State.

In a desperate attempt at damage control, the Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, has denied that the funds were bribes to secure support for the emergency rule.

Investigative journalist Jaafar Jaafar disclosed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Betara reached out to clarify that the $5,000 given to lawmakers was merely a "Sallah Gesture" and not an inducement.

According to the journalist, Betara said it was part of a long-standing tradition and had nothing to do with the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

"The chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, has clarified to me that he only shared $5,000 to each member of his committee as a 'Sallah Gesture' not an inducement to support emergency rule in Rivers State. According to him, he maintains the tradition – like Santa Claus – every year. As we say in Hausa, not thigh but hind leg," Jaafar posted.

However, this explanation corroborates SaharaReporters' previous exclusive findings, which revealed that substantial sums were handed out at Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s guest house in Maitama, Abuja, to sway lawmakers in favour of the emergency rule.

Multiple sources confirmed to SaharaReporters that Akpabio’s guest house at No. 22, Yedeseram Street was the epicentre of the cash distribution. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, senators were discreetly handed stacks of dollars, allegedly as a reward for supporting Tinubu’s controversial move.

"The venue was the Senate President's guest house at No. 22, Yedeseram Street, Maitama, where 42 senators were given $10,000 each last Wednesday night, and 45 senators received $5,000 each on Tuesday night, March 18, to pass the controversial Rivers State emergency rule," a top source confirmed.

Adding fuel to the scandal, SaharaReporters also learned that Labour Party senators Victor Umeh and Neda Imasuen played key roles in facilitating the payout despite their party's opposition stance.

"They were the only Labour Party senators present at both events on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and participated in collecting the money," a source disclosed.

This comes amid earlier reports that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike allegedly provided over $3 million to Akpabio to ensure the Senate backed the emergency rule declaration. Sources told SaharaReporters that Wike and Akpabio met following Tinubu’s directive to "do the groundwork” for the emergency declaration.

The cash reportedly flowed during an Iftar dinner attended by selected senators, where varying amounts of dollars were allegedly distributed based on lawmakers' seniority.

Despite the massive cash incentives, some prominent senators, including former governors Seriake Dickson and Aminu Tambuwal, reportedly snubbed the event.

Further intrigue unfolded last Wednesday when Senate deliberations on the emergency rule were postponed to 3 p.m., allegedly to prevent a full house from voting on the matter. According to insiders, Senate President Akpabio orchestrated the delay to ensure that opposition voices were absent when the motion was pushed forward.

"The senators requested an open vote, but Akpabio postponed it until 3 p.m. when most senators would have left the chamber," a source told SaharaReporters.

"At least 72 senators are required to sign, but fewer than 60 were present today. The House of Representatives also needs a minimum of 240 votes. Meanwhile, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas was not informed, which explains the chaos in the House of Representatives today."

President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing political instability and security threats, including recent oil pipeline vandalism.

However, the revelations of cash-for-support allegations raise serious questions about the move's legitimacy and the extent of the political manoeuvring behind it.

The few minutes left in the first half handed Shooting Stars more chances to increase their tally but none of their efforts paid off, thus ending the first half 2-0.

Niger Tornadoes tried to force their way back nto the game, when they reduced the tally in the 66th minute through Sunday Williams.

Debutant Samuel Okon will later put the game beyond the visitors with a well taken third goal to send the home fans into frenzy.

SUPREME COURT AFFIRMS ANYANWU AS AUTHENTIC PDP NATIONAL SECRETARY

SUPREME COURT AFFIRMS ANYANWU AS AUTHENTIC PDP NATIONAL SECRETARY
The Supreme Court has nullified the judgements of the Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, which sacked Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

Five-member panel of the apex court on Friday held that the issue of who is the National Secretary of the PDP borders on the internal affairs of a political party, which is not justiciable.

Justice Jamilu Tukur, who delivered the lead judgment of the Supreme Court, consequently struck out the judgment of the trial court delivered in October last year and also set aside the majority judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had in December affirmed the sack of Anyanwu as PDP’s National Secretary.

Justice Tukur subsequently affirmed the minority judgment of the appellate court delivered by Justice Ekanem, which had nullified the judgment of the trial court on account of lack of jurisdiction.

Besides, the apex court held that the plaintiff, Aniagu Emmanuel, who initiated the suit at the trial court, lacked the necessary legal backing to do so, since he did not show how he was affected by who is the National Secretary of the PDP.

Agabi said that Kanu had cause to be angry but ought not to have spoken when anger overwhelmed him.

RESPONSE OF THE PDP GOVERNORS' FORUM TO THE DECLARATION OF STATE OF EMERGENCY IN RIVERS STATE

RESPONSE OF THE PDP GOVERNORS' FORUM TO THE DECLARATION OF STATE OF EMERGENCY IN RIVERS STATE
The Peoples Democratic Party Governors' Forum ( PDPGF) notes with grave concern and utter misgiving the suspension of democratic rule in Rivers State by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu  in his nationwide broadcast of Tuesday, 18th March, 2025.

We stand in  solidarity with  His Excellency , Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara  of Rivers State and the good people of Rivers State at this very difficult and trying moment of the state's political history. There is no other time that our philosophy of "TOUCH ONE TOUCH ALL" is more apt than now.

He who goes to the court of equity must go with clean hands. Mr. President , your silence on the active role played by your Minister of the FCT in the Rivers impasse is golden and enabling. He has become a law unto himself because he was playing out your script. Now we know. This is totally unstatemanly, biased, and divisive.

We state categorically that this unwarranted but premeditated attack on Rivers State and the Peoples Democratic Party and other opposition parties is today, the greatest threat to democracy in our dear country,  Nigeria and it is an ill wind that will blow no one any good. It is a dangerous course of action that will not only endanger our hard won democracy, but will exacerbate the crises in the nation, deepen mistrust, elevate security threats, destroy the economy, and our national cohesion and stability.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in it's response signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has already  expressed grave concern about the purported suspension by the President of the Governor of Rivers State, the Deputy Governor, and the Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The NBA affirmed their commitment to upholding the Constitution, defending democratic governance, and ensuring that the rule of law prevails in Nigeria. In their words, "A state of emergency is an extraordinary measure that must be invoked strictly within constitutional limits. The removal of elected officials under the pretext of emergency rule is unconstitutional and unacceptable.

The Forum completely aligns itself with the NBA and promises to subject Section 305 (3) of the Constitution to judicial interpretation. This authoritarian shenanigan is unacceptable and cannot stand.

Mr President is therefore called upon to listen to wise counsel and the voice of reason, as well as accept that he made grevious mistakes and acted in haste, and reverse this atrocious and retrograde decision before it is too late.

Signed:
Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed  CON Governor of Bauchi State/Chairman, PDP Governors' Forum.
