"Oyo State Tertiary Institutions Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands"

"Oyo State Tertiary Institutions Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands"
The Polytechnic Ibadan, along with four other tertiary institutions in Oyo State, embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday, March 10, 2025. The strike was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising 15 staff unions, to press for their demands, including the implementation of the new minimum wage and an increase in subvention released for the institutions.

The affected institutions include:

- The Polytechnic, Ibadan
- The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki
- Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa
- Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora
- Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate

The strike is a result of the state government's failure to address the longstanding issues of non-implementation of the approved 25/35% salary increase and the new minimum wage for workers in the polytechnic and college of education sector.

According to the Chairman of the JAC, the staff unions had engaged in a series of meetings with the state government to resolve the issues, but to no avail. He stated that the strike would continue until the government meets their demands.

In a related development, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) had earlier suspended a three-day warning strike after a meeting with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, where the government reaffirmed its commitment to resolving SSANIP's grievances.

However, it's worth noting that The Polytechnic Ibadan had previously denied rumors of a strike in May 2021, stating that they had reached an amicable resolution with the state government.

The indefinite strike has disrupted academic activities in the affected institutions, leaving students uncertain about their academic future. The state government has yet to comment on the strike.

Oyo Govt. Threatens To Sanction Erring Waste Contractors

Oyo Govt. Threatens To Sanction Erring Waste Contractors

The Oyo State government has threatened to sanction about 20 waste management consultants who have failed to honour the terms of agreement with the government to dispose refuse in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Arc. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, said this today, after a meeting with the consultants in Ibadan.

Mogbonjubola stated that the government’s aim of contracting the collection of waste in the state was to ensure a clean environment for the residents.

He, however, expressed disappointment that for months, some of the waste management consultants did not keep to the terms of agreement, as dirt litters major streets of Ibadan.

The Commissioner therefore said the Oyo state government has initiated a comprehensive review and renewal of the waste management consultant’s contract to ensure improved service delivery and compliance with environmental regulations.

According to him, the review process, held on Thursday and Friday at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan, aims to assess the consultant’s performance, identify areas for improvement, and enhance the efficiency of waste management services across the state.

Hon. Mogbonjubola emphasized that the evaluation focuses on key performance indicators, including operational efficiency, financial compliance, regulatory adherence, innovation, sustainability, and transparency.

He clarified that the review is not a witch-hunt but a necessary step to ensure that public concerns are addressed and service delivery is optimized.

He said, to oversee the process, a mini-committee was set up to conduct a thorough assessment.

"Upon completion, the Ministry will decide whether to extend the contract under revised terms or renegotiate it to improve performance", he said.

The Commissioner also reiterated the Oyo State Government’s commitment to modernizing waste management through innovative solutions such as smart waste bins, digital monitoring systems, and expanded recycling initiatives to complement the consultant’s efforts.

“But I must say that I am disappointed on the low performance of the waste contractors because for the last two months waste continued to pile on the roads with nobody coming to evacuate them"

“If things continue this way, we will have no option but to revoke the contracts,” he said.

Mogbonjubola called on residents of the state to be patient, adding that all piles of refuse would soon be cleared.

The management of Ilaji Group, Ibadan, has addressed the resignation of its former General Manager, Ajibola Akinyefa, clarifying the circumstances surrounding his exit.

In a statement shared with newsmen, the group emphasized that every organization operates based on set standards, processes, and procedures that guide its administration.

Freshvoice Newsmedia gathered that Akinyefa’s decision to resign was influenced by a change in his designation from General Manager (GM) to Head of Station (HOS). However, the management stated that this change was implemented after it was determined that he had “failed woefully in the discharge of his duties.”

According to the statement, Ilaji FM operates as a unit within the larger Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort conglomerate, where professionalism, discipline, and adherence to corporate ethics are paramount.

The management stressed that Akinyefa resigned voluntarily and was not forced out, as he claimed.

“He simply realized that his flagrant disregard for constituted authority, self-destructive pride, and inflated ego had no place in our well-structured establishment,” the statement read.

The organization maintained that the change in his designation was intended for his professional development, but his inability to meet expectations led to his exit.

“At Ilaji, every position carries responsibilities and obligations, and anything short of that is unacceptable,” the statement added.

The management urged the public to disregard any contrary narratives regarding Akinyefa’s departure.

Oyo Govt To Upgrade 66 PHCs for Better Healthcare Delivery

Oyo Govt To Upgrade 66 PHCs for Better Healthcare Delivery
The Oyo State Government has announced plans to upgrade 66 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) across the state, with at least two facilities in each of the 33 Local Government Areas (LGAs) set for revitalization.

Addressing a critical stakeholders’ meeting yesterday, held at SDM Tavern Hotels and Suites in Ibadan, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi emphasized that the revitalization of PHCs is a fundamental step in improving healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.

She reiterated that the initiative would ensure the provision of essential amenities needed for effective primary healthcare services.

“Primary Healthcare Centers serve as the first point of contact for medical care, making their efficiency crucial to the overall healthcare system. The government cannot do it alone; community involvement is key to sustaining these facilities. We urge stakeholders to take ownership and support this initiative for long-term success,” she stated.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of First Health Dynamic Synergy International Limited, Professor Temitope Alonge, explained that three key criteria were used in selecting the PHCs for upgrade in each LGA.

The first criteria is the patient load. The two PHCs serving the largest population in each LGA were prioritized. The second criteria is category 2 or 3 PHCs, while the third criteria is for facilities with an existing borehole and an alternative power source.

He noted that the project will involve both infrastructural improvements and provision of medical equipment such as installation of a 10KVA solar inverter system and boreholes to ensure uninterrupted power and water supply The medical equipment supply of essential medical devices will include autoclave machines with gas cylinders, among others. The upgrade will also include the implementation of a Drug Revolving Fund to ensure a steady supply of essential medicines. Security enhancement of the facilities will also be included in the upgrade.

Professor Alonge urged Ward Development Committees (WDCs) and PHC Coordinators to take responsibility for the facilities, stressing that they belong to the communities rather than the Primary Healthcare Board. He emphasized that a shift in mindset towards ownership and accountability would be crucial in maintaining improved centers.

He added that the same meeting would be replicated in other zones across the state for the WDC Chairmen and PHC Coordinators.

The Health care center upgrade stakeholders meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 4th March, and to end on Thursday, 6th March 2025.
