IRANIAN GENERAL, PILOT KILLED IN HELICOPTER CRASH DURING ANTI-TERROR OPERATIONS
An Iranian Revolutionary Guards general and pilot were killed in a helicopter crash during an anti-terror operation in the country’s restive southeast, state media reported on Monday.

According to reports, the “ultra-light gyroplane” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps “had an accident while conducting combat operations” in a border area.

It said the crash happened in Sirkan, a city in Sistan-Baluchistan province, and identified the dead as General Hamid Mazandarani, the commander of the Nineveh Brigade of Golestan province, and Hamed Jandaghi, a pilot of the IRGC ground forces.

Iran’s armed forces have been mounting an operation in the region since October 26, when 10 police officers were killed in an attack claimed by Sunni Muslim militants.

They have killed several militants and arrested others during the operation.

Sistan-Baluchistan borders Pakistan and Afghanistan and is one of the most impoverished provinces in the Islamic republic and has experienced recurring clashes between Iranian security forces and rebels from the Baluch minority, radical Sunni groups, and drug traffickers.

We need to start picking points on the road - 3SC gaffer Ogunbote

We need to start picking points on the road - 3SC gaffer Ogunbote
Technical Adviser of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) Gbenga Ogunbote, admits picking points on the road has been an issue for his side in the ten week old 2024/25 NPFL season.

He however reckons that for his side to consolidate on the back to back victories recorded on Matchday eight and nine, the team must get something from its next trip to Minna.

The Ibadan soccer lords will engage Niger Tornadoes this Sunday, at the Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna, after two consecutive home wins against Katsina United and Akwa United

Oracle, as the tactician is popularly known, opines his side needs something positive from the encounter.

"Getting points on the road had been an issue but I believe with these two wins, I'm sure the confidence level of the players would have been raised a little bit, going into the next match.

"We need points on the road to consolidate", said the gaffer, who added that his side nurses no fear against any team, particularly with a level playing ground

"As far as I am concerned, we are not scared of any team, all we are pleading and appealing for is a level playing ground, I mean a fair officiating anywhere we go, even if we loss with good officiating, we will accept the fact that we have lost to a better side," concluded the 3SC sweat metchant.

Rice, A Luxury in Nigeria: Soaring Prices Amidst Economic Hardship

Rice, A Luxury in Nigeria: Soaring Prices Amidst Economic Hardship

As I reflect on the current state of affairs in Nigeria, I am compelled to express my deepest sympathy for the millions of citizens struggling to make ends meet. The recent removal of the petrol subsidy and the weakening naira have unleashed a tsunami of price increases, with rice being one of the hardest-hit commodities.

A 50kg bag of locally produced parboiled rice now costs approximately ₦105,000, surpassing the new minimum wage of ₦70,000. Imported rice is even more expensive, with a 50kg bag priced at around ₦130,000. This price surge underscores the limited production capacity of smallholder farmers, who struggle with challenges such as insecurity, high input costs, and logistical issues.

As a concerned citizen, I empathize with families who can no longer afford this staple food. Chioma Okeke, a Lagos teacher, poignantly expressed the frustration many feel: "How can I afford ₦105,000 for rice when I earn only ₦100,000? Prices keep going up, and subsidy removal has made it harder."

The federal government's suspension of import duties on rice and other essential items, though well-intentioned, has yet to bring relief. Factors like recent flooding and Niger's grain export ban have further restricted rice supply, affecting food security in Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, under President Bola Tinubu's administration, has a crucial role to play in addressing the challenges faced by the masses. As outlined in the Constitution, the federal government is responsible for Maintenance of Law and Order, ensuring the safety and security of citizens. Additionally, it must Protect Lives and Properties, securing the well-being of Nigerians and their investments.

To alleviate the suffering of the masses, the government can focus on Provision of Social Welfare Services, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development Promotion of Economic Development is also vital, creating jobs and stimulating growth through policies and programs.

The state governors also have a critical role to play in addressing the challenges faced by their respective states. By working together, the federal government and state governors can make a significant difference in the lives of Nigerians.

As Ambassador Segun Akinlabi, I urge the government to take swift action to alleviate the suffering of our people. We need policies that support local farmers, address supply chain disruptions, and provide immediate relief to vulnerable populations.

To my fellow Nigerians, I say: "May we soon witness plentiful times again." Let us hold on to hope and work together towards a brighter future.

Egalitarian (Ambassador) Segun O. AKINLABI
