PROTEST: POLICE SPEAKS TOUGH AGAINST DISPLAY OF FOREIGN FLAGS, CLAMOUR FOR MILITARY TAKEOVER

PROTEST: POLICE SPEAKS TOUGH AGAINST DISPLAY OF FOREIGN FLAGS, CLAMOUR FOR MILITARY TAKEOVER
As Police Torchlights Individuals Sponsored to Trigger Crisis in Nigeria

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning against the display of foreign flags during protests and calls for a military takeover, categorizing such actions as treasonable felonies under Nigerian law. This follows a wave of violent protests, particularly in Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina States, where protesters brandished foreign flags.

Ongoing investigations reveal that protest organizers in the states mentioned above are luring innocent children into participating in these unpatriotic and criminal acts. Over ninety suspects have been arrested, including tailors who sewed the flags and their sponsors. Efforts are underway to apprehend others who sponsored the production of the flags and fuelled these treasonable acts.

The display of foreign flags and calls for a military takeover constitutes a clear treasonable offense, revealing the motives of protest organizers to destabilize Nigeria's democratic government. This aligns with actionable intelligence on the tactics of fifth columnists and non-state actors exploiting economic hardship protests to further their nefarious goals.

Tensions from the ongoing protests have eased following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's address on August 4, 2024. However, some groups persist in subversive campaigns in the form of violent and unlawful protests, characterized by the destruction of public infrastructure and private property, looting, display of foreign flags, and calls for a military takeover. These individuals and groups will be treated as subversive agents and charged accordingly.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has directed Deputy Inspectors General of Police for the Northwest and Northeast zones, DIGs Bala Ciroma, psc, and Bello Makwashi, to take charge of operations in the states within the two geo-political zones where subversive campaigns are ongoing under the guise of protests. They are tasked with stabilizing the situation and preventing further violence in the affected states.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that the use of foreign flags during protests and openly calling for a military takeover of the government is a capital offense under Nigerian law. The Police cautions Nigerian youths to be wary of individuals and groups turning protests into business ventures, funded by local or foreign sponsors aiming to destabilize the country. Evidence shows that these sponsors have paid significant sums to exploit the hardship protests, brainwashing and misleading innocent children into aiding this campaign against the government.

The Nigeria Police Force salutes Nigerians who have refused to participate in and indeed spoke out against the ill-timed protest out of sheer patriotism and belief in the government's genuine efforts to put the country on the path of economic recovery and growth. We also acknowledge the patriotism of those who peacefully participated in the protests but withdrew when they turned violent, and those who heeded the President's call to embrace dialogue by withdrawing from the protests.

The NPF remains committed to maintaining peace, protecting the nation's heritage, and working with the public to ensure the safety and stability of Nigeria.

BREAKING!!! Angry And Hungry Youths Set APC Lawmaker Mansion on Fire

BREAKING!!! Angry And Hungry Youths Set APC Lawmaker Mansion on Fire
The residence of Hon. Nazifi Sani, the federal representative for the Gumel/Maigatari/Sule-Tankarkar/Gagarwa constituency in Jigawa State, has been set on fire by hungry and angry youths.

9News Nigeria reports that the protests which have swept across the nation are fueled by widespread grievances over economic hardship and a nationwide hunger crisis, which many attribute to poor government policies.
The incident at Hon. Sani’s residence occurred as youths expressed their anger and frustration over the misappropriation of funds.

Despite the imposition of curfews in several protest-affected states in northern Nigeria, and repeated calls for calm from authorities, the unrest persists.

9News Nigeria had reported that angry youths protesting against the hunger in the country also reached former Governor Nyesom Wike’s residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Wike, the Federal Capital Territory minister, had vehemently kicked against the protest in the Nigerian capital.

While the protests seem to have died down in the FCT, the street processions are gradually picking up in Wike’s home state.

The demonstrators have now gathered at the former governor’s mansion in the state capital as the protests enter Day 6.

In response, the Nigerian Police Force has deployed additional personnel to the area to maintain order and ensure the safety of all parties involved.

One of the protesters in a viral video seen by our reporter described Wike as one of the criminals benefiting from the government of the day.

US ELECTION: KAMALA HARRIS TO PICK RUNNING MATE

US ELECTION: KAMALA HARRIS TO PICK RUNNING MATE.
The US vice president’s campaign has come out of the blocks at a lightning pace since she replaced Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, smashing fundraising records and wiping out the leads built up by Republican rival Donald Trump.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democratic rising star, is considered the favorite to join Harris as her vice-presidential pick, ahead of several other state governors, a US senator and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

It was reported that Harris had narrowed one of the most consequential choices of her political career to Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and would likely make her decision public in a video announcement.

Less than a day before their swing state journey, Harris was maintaining the suspense about her running mate, telling supporters in a text message Monday evening that “I have not made my decision yet.”

Harris, 59, and her newly minted deputy will hold a rally Tuesday at Temple University in Philadelphia before hitting Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday, Arizona on Friday and Nevada on Saturday.

FUEL QUEUES TO CLEAR AS LOADING RESUMES AT DEPOTS

FUEL QUEUES TO CLEAR AS LOADING RESUMES AT DEPOTS

The queues at filling stations for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, may subside this week as PMS loading has resumed in Lagos depots.

The depot owners decided not to open for business because of the hunger protest that started on Thursday. Truck owners and drivers were also afraid of possible attacks while transporting fuel.

Oil marketers had also explained on Monday that the reappearance of queues at filling stations in many states was because of the halt in the supply of petroleum products by dealers in a bid to avert losing their assets due to the ongoing nationwide hunger protests.

Many states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, witnessed varying degrees of queues about two weeks ago, which the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited blamed on a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels.

While the company and stakeholders worked together to tackle the challenge, the nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship commenced on Thursday, August 1, 2024, disrupting petrol supply again and causing the reappearance of queues in some states.

However, a reliable source at the depot reveals on Monday that some trucks were loaded on Sunday and Monday to supply petrol across the country.

Officials of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and other government agencies were reportedly at the depots to supervise the process.

CBN RAISES IMPORT DUTY RATE TO N1,618.73/$

CBN RAISES IMPORT DUTY RATE TO N1,618.73/$
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has increased the exchange rate for the clearance of cargo at the nation’s seaports and airports from N1,600.32 to N1,618.732.

This change is the highest rate since March 2024 and comes amid a 6.43 per cent depreciation of the naira in July. The increase is expected to further strain importers, as it raises the cost of imports and contributes to inflation. The CBN’s interventions to stabilize the naira have included multiple foreign exchange sales, but challenges persist in the market.

According to the Nigeria trade hub, the federal government official single window for trade, the exchange rate increased by N18 from the previous rate of N1600.32 to the USD.

It was, however, gathered that the depreciation happened despite the CBN’s attempts to address the official market’s liquidity issues through dollar sales.

In July, the CBN conducted at least three foreign exchange (FX) sales to authorised dealers and one sale to Bureau de Change (BDC) operators as the naira faced significant pressure.

Speaking on the increase in exchange rate, a clearing agent, Oladimeji Majekodunmi, said that the cost of clearing containers at the ports will increase tremendously.

Meanwhile, the national President of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA), Lucky Amiwero, urged the federal government, through the CBN, to implement a special exchange rate for calculating import duties.

Amiwero emphasised that a stable and manageable exchange rate for import duties would stimulate economic growth and benefit the broader Nigerian population.

He, however, expressed significant concern over the current practice of using floating exchange rates for customs duty calculations. He argued that this approach has contributed substantially to the rising costs of goods and escalating food prices in Nigerian markets.
