The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III, has for the first time reacted publicly to the Chief Imam impasse rocking the Muslim community in Ogbomoso, Oyo state, which has seen the Chief Imam, Sheikh Teliat Yinusa Olushina Ayilara, accusing Soun of being the mastermind.

Oba Olaoye’s reaction, ogbomosoinsightonline.com learned, was sequel to the visit of a mediation envoy of the Yorubaland Council of Islamic Preachers (ITIHAD).

This is as a peace meeting initiated by the group which met separately with Alfa Teliat Yunus and the Ayilara family which last week disowned him was deadlocked as each side reportedly remains “recalcitrant.”

The three man team comprising Sheikh Akeugbagold Taofeeq (Ibadan, Oyo state), Sheikh Abdullah Olounlomerue (Ede, Osun state) and Sheikh Sulaiman Olore (Ibadan, Oyo state), made the Ogbomoso Palace their first port of call on arriving the city.

Harping that the influential body had found out the matter did not involve the Soun, they noted, “We can’t come to Ogbomoso without paying courtesy visit to Your Majesty, out of deference and to intimate you of our mission since it is an issue that concerns your domain.”

Speaking, Sheikh Akeugbagold Taofeeq, said, ”The mandate of our council in Ogbomoso is to find amicable solution to the lingering crisis. That’s why we have come and we can’t come to Ogbomoso without visiting Your Majesty because we have seen you are not involved in the matter. Moreover, we must accord honour to whom it’s due.”

Continuing, he stressed, “We have been on this matter for over six months during which we reached out to the Imam to caution him. Let it be known that we stand for the truth. If we see anyone going astray we try to whip him into line. We always side with the truth, and promote religious understanding and harmony.”

The Islamic leader lauded the Soun over what he described as his peaceful disposition. “Seeing your mien shows you are a man of peace. We have walked with many traditional rulers and so, l know what l am saying.”

He further submitted, “We abhor any of us insulting a traditional ruler, so, we will summon him to Ibadan, if he comes so be it, if does not, so be it. But we will stand by the truth.”

Appealing to Soun, he declared, “We will abide by your decision on the matter, Kabiyesi. The Imam that you back will be our friend because in Yorubaland, religion is in the hand of the Oba.”

Also, Sheikh Olounlomerue, chairman of the council in Osun state, disclosed the group understood the crisis started before the enthronement of Oba Ghandi, asserting it was therefore wrong to drag the Oba into the fracas.

Olounlomerue noted Islam preaches peace “but it is the extremists who often provoke crisis,” while pleading with the monarch to persist to be tolerant.

In his short response, the Soun said he was baffled but unfazed that he became the butt of attack in the imbroglio which he reiterated was instigated before his ascension.

The monarch however stressed the Imam needs to clear himself with the Ayilaras on his true identity.

He emphasized Chief Imamship is based on rotation among six families like it’s with Obaship, noting “usurpation” has no place in the system.

He insisted and affirmed the battle is between the Ayilara family and the Imam, that it has nothing to do with him.

“He (the Chief Imam) is evading leprosy to treat guinea worm. He has a problem with the Ayilaras and it is those people he should face but because he has no point to defend himself against them he shifted the battlefront. It is not done.

”They claimed he does not share blood affinity with them, that is what he should rather prove. If you hear the Ayilara family’s press conference you will get the crux of the matter. They disclosed that in his defence, he had claimed to have come from four different lineages within the family, how can such stand? They asserted they don’t bear Olushina he said he is Olushina.

“It is the family he has problem with, not Oba Ghandi. There have been several violent clashes as a result of the crisis, Will l be happy about that?

“The recommendation made by the different panels and at least 8 letters written by different Islamic groups to me, requesting that he should step aside, l did not implement and kept him as Chief Imam. The next thing we heard is that he had sued us. But all what he is saying does not bother me.

“But he has to sort himself out with the Ayilara family because that is the family to produce the Chief Imam. The Chief Imam is produced by six families. it’s because l am from Laoye family that l am made the Oba, so also Imam, the Imam must come from a recognized family. So, if he is not from that family, he has to sort himself out. So, it is Ayilara versus Imam. I have no personal interest in the matter.”

Meanwhile, details of the separate meetings the delegate had with the Ayilara family and the embattled Imam could not be obtained as at the time of filing this report even though it’s affirmed it was deadlocked either side.

Sources informed ogbomosoinsightonline.com that while the Ayilara family strongly rejected the appeal to “accommodate” or “adopt” the Imam, the Imam expressed strong reservation and discontent to the fact that the delegation discussed with Oba Ghandi on a “friendly basis” and thus accused them of bias just as he was said to have insisted he’s of Ayilara family.

Thus, “peaceful settlement remains elusive,” a source disclosed.

Giving a report of the visit, Alhaji Akeugbagold in his Facebook wall (Sheikh Akeugbagold Taofeeq) wrote, “THE YORUBALAND COUNCIL FOR ISLAMIC PREACHERS (ITIHAD) delegated 3 members in person of Sheikh Akeugbagold, Sheikh Olounlomerue & Sheikh Sulaiman Olore,to visit the ancient city of Ogbomoso on fact finding &to see to how to mend fence & return peace to the beloved Muslim community leadership. We appreciate His imperial majesty OBA Ghandi Orumogege for hosting us for 2 hours plus, his Eminence the Chief imam Toliha Yunus 2hours plus, the over one hour spent with us by AYILARA family ,the kind gesture of Senator Abdul fatai Buhari & the visiting of his new, ultra modern but yet to be commissioned mosque , the interesting re union and breakfast from Alh Ejide, the lovely dinner by Alh.Egbeji, the visit to us by many Islamic leaders in the city.We see light at end of the tunnel &pray those concerned summon courage to do the needful to let peace reign. We pray Allah to assist the ummah in returning peace & love to the central mosque.Quran says:” And reconciliation is better, and do good and fear Allah, surely Allah is well acquainted with what you do,” Quran 4 v128.Wajazakumullahu khairan to everyone.”

Free Omituntun 2.0 buses for PWDs: Disability Leader Publicly Commends Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

--Raji Ade Oba

Ibadan.

Ambassador Olusegun Oyedeji, Oyo State’s foremost disability leader and sports administrator, has expressed great appreciation to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for providing free public transportation to thousands of people with disabilities in the state.

Toward the end of 2023, the Oyo State Government, as part of palliative measures to cushion the effects of naira and fuel scarcity on residents of Oyo State, implemented the Omituntun 2.0 bus that he had promised to Oyo residents under the “Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery” (SAfER) initiative.

This initiative was designed to improve the city’s mobility and alleviate the challenges that come with subsidy removal.

Although the state government rolled out the fares and list of intercity and intracity routes of Omituntun buses, the governor has formally exempted people with disabilities from paying a kobo. With a government-issued identity card for persons with disabilities under the aegis of Oyo State Agency for People with Disabilities, no single ID-carrying disabled person will pay a fare to enter Omituntun buses in the state.

The ID card is the condition attached to enjoy free public transportation.

Branded under the umbrella of “Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery”(SAFER), this initiative bolsters the city’s intracity mobility and introduces intercity connectivity, linking Ibadan to various zones.

Oyedeji expressed his profound gratitude and appreciation for the remarkable initiative taken by the Makinde administration in providing free public transportation to thousands of people with disabilities in Oyo State, adding that this commendable effort reflects the governor’s commitment to inclusivity and social welfare, and it has undoubtedly made a significant positive impact on the lives of many.

The ambassador expressed that the decision to extend this service to people with disabilities showcases a deep understanding of the challenges they face in accessing public transportation. By eliminating financial barriers, the governor has not only made daily commuting more accessible but also fostered a sense of dignity and independence among this often marginalized group.

All disability clusters, including the Deaf, the Blind, the physically challenged, people with albinism, and significant others, will use the Omituntun 2.0 buses free of charge statewide.

The provision of free public transportation is a testament to this administration's dedication to creating an inclusive and compassionate society. It goes beyond just policy implementation; it reflects a genuine concern for the well-being and empowerment of all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities.

As a resident of Oyo State and a native of the Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Ibadan, the Ambassador said he and his community were proud to witness such progressive and empathetic governance, adding that the current state leadership sets a remarkable example for others to follow. “I believe that initiatives like these contribute significantly to the overall development and well-being of our beloved state.” He enthused.

On behalf of the Oyo State disability community, the disability leader and administrator thanked Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the marginalized people of Oyo State. “Your actions resonate deeply, and they inspire hope for a more equitable and inclusive future.” He concluded.

President Federation Cup: 10-Man Shooting Stars Survive Solution FC Scare

President Federation Cup: 10-Man Shooting Stars Survive Solution FC Scare

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, on Wednesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, beat Solution FC of Anambra 3-2 via penalties to qualify for the round of 32 of the 2024 President Federation Cup.

The victory did not come on a platter of gold as the Oluyole Warriors were made to labour hard before subduing the Nigeria National League (NNL) side.

The Ibadan soccer lords were at the verge of a shocking elimination after going down one nil in the 78th minute, but were saved by a brilliant free kick by substitute Mustapha Adams Agba'a, who struck on the dot of 90 minutes.

Shooting Stars were reduced to 10 men late in the first half when left back Ehibe Victor, was expelled after comitting a second bookable offence.

Solution FC, who were lucky not to have conceded a goal in the first half due to 3SC' s inability to convert begging chances, tried to make the numerical strenght count in the second half, but found 3SC too hard to break.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, Gali Falke had his kick saved while the trio of Mustapha Adams, Ayodeji Bamidele and Alex Aghahowa converted theirs.

Goalkeeper Odah Okemute dived well enough to save Solution FC's last kick, after they had initially lost two kicks, thus rendering Shooting Stars's last kick inconsequential.

35% salary increase not minimum wage – labour clarifies

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has clarified that the 25 per cent and 35 per cent increase in workers’ salary announced by the Federal Government is not minimum wage.

The President of the association, Mr Tommy Okon, made the clarification while fielding questions from newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

Okon, who is also the Vice President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), said that the approval of the salary increase was to close the salary gap that existed in some Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

“Other sectors have benefitted from these increases, it is only the core Federal Civil Service. So, it is a good development no doubt, but the people need to be informed.

“Some even saw it as if the government had ambushed the labour unions and then come out unilaterally to increase the minimum wage to that amount. Whereas, it is not the minimum wage.

“The minimum wage is ongoing ,what the government did was to correct some gaps that existed among the pay of those in that sectors listed,” he said

Okon said the clarification was important for the generality of workers and the masses at large that the salary increase was to bridge wage gap in the civil service.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the federal government on Tuesday announced increase of between 25 per cent and 35 per cent in salary of civil servants on the remaining six consolidated salary structures.

They include Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS) and Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS).

Others are Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS) and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

JUST IN: No Ondo politician beat my credentials, says PDP gov candidate

JUST IN: No Ondo politician beat my credentials, says PDP gov candidate

:

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the forthcoming election in Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, has said no politician matches his credentials and experience in the state.

Ajayi disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television Programme, Politics Today, on Tuesday.

Reeling out what distinguishes him from other politicians in the state, the former deputy governor boasted that he is not scared of Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s incumbency power because many incumbent governors have been defeated in the past.

Aiyedatiwa is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the election.

Ajayi said, “I started politics at a very tender age. I was a ward chairman in my local government and later the secretary of the ward. Then, I became a supervisory councillor twice, after which I became chairman of a tier committee in my local government, Ese-Odo. Later, I was elected as the council chairman for another three years. I was elected to House of Reps from 2007 to 2011. And then I became a deputy governor. I have a track record.

“As a matter of fact, with due respect to political leaders in Ondo State, I have never seen anybody who must have gotten through these stages and beat my credentials in Ondo politics.

“I did my best when I served as a deputy governor, and this is one of the credentials that stands me out. People know I have the capacity, and my name is a household name in Ondo State.

“I wasn’t able to do some things that I wanted to do because of the constitutional limitations of my office. The National Assembly should do something about it by spelling out the constitutional roles of the offices of the Vice President and deputy governor to make them more relevant.”

Speaking on why Eyitayo Jegede wasn’t contesting, Agboola said it was the south’s turn to produce the next governor of the state.

“The late Governor Akeredolu is from Ondo North. Ordinarily, he was supposed to spend eight years, but we want to believe that it is still his tenure. Former Governor Olusegun Mimiko from the Central spent eight years. Now, it is the turn of the South. That’s why, if you look at the two major political parties, the contestants are from the south.

“Eyitayo and I are friends; we are talking. He was supposed to be in my programme today but was unavoidably absent,” he said.

He, however, declined comment on the feud between him and the late Akeredolu that led to his eventual replacement as deputy governor.

“We disagreed. He was a nice man. He’s not alive today, and I don’t want to talk about him, so we should allow him to rest,” he said.

Asked how he intends to govern the state, the PDP governorship candidate said he would not govern Ondo with the Federal Government’s allocation after four years of emerging as governor, adding that he would turn the state into an economically viable one.

"I am from a riverine area. As governor, I would provide massive infrastructure to link the sea. Once that is done, our sea is much longer and deeper than Lagos State’s, which gives us leverage to make more money from it.

“Our sea is untapped. I will link the sea with the rail. We will let vessels and commercial trains that would be carrying heavy loads reduce the influx of trailers spoiling our road every day. We will make money, and the government will be doing very well,” he added.

Earlier, the PDP presented a Certificate of Return to Ajayi.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission has set November 16, 2024, as the scheduled date for the state’s election.

In a landslide victory, candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have secured the chairmanship positions in 33 local government areas of Oyo State on Saturday, 27th April, 2024. This resounding win comes as a testament to the party's widespread support and effective campaign strategies leading up to the elections.

Notably, the PDP's success was further bolstered by the overwhelming support from people with disabilities, thanks to the community organizing initiative spearheaded by Ambassador Olusegun Oyedeji Abayomi, Oyo State's foremost disability leader.

Through his efforts, individuals with disabilities were mobilized to exercise their democratic rights and cast their votes in favor of the PDP candidates.

Ambassador Oyedeji Abayomi commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to ensuring a free and fair election process. The governor's efforts to uphold transparency and accountability in the electoral process have been instrumental in promoting confidence and trust among voters across the state.

The victory of PDP candidates in the local government chairmanship elections signifies a significant milestone for the party and underscores its popularity and strong grassroots support in Oyo State. As the newly-elected chairmen assume their roles, expectations are high for them to deliver on their promises and work tirelessly towards the development and prosperity of their respective local government areas.
