PDP Rejects Emergency Rule in Rivers State

PDP Rejects Emergency Rule in Rivers State
…Insists Tinubu has no Powers to Suspend a Democratically Elected Governor
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and indeed, Nigerians listened with dismay the national broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in which the President, in utter violation of the 1999 Constitution pronounced an imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State

The PDP outrightly rejects this attempt by the President to override the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and undermine the votes and Will of the people of Rivers State by seeking to depose a democratic government and foist an undemocratic rule in the State.

The unconstitutional declaration by President Tinubu of the suspension of the democratically elected Governor of Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and appointment of an unelected individual, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) to govern the State is a clear attack on our nation’s democracy, an abrogation of the votes and democratic right of the people of Rivers State to choose their leader under the Constitution.

The action of Mr. President therefore clearly borders on attempt at state capture. It is the climax of a well-oiled plot to forcefully take over Rivers State for which the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been bent on stoking crisis to ensure that democracy is ultimately truncated in the State.

Nigerians are invited to note that the situation in Rivers State and the reasons adduced by the President cannot justify the declaration of a state of emergency in the State under the 1999 Constitution, rendering the declaration completely incompetent.

The PDP alerts that the unwarranted imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State is part of the larger vicious plot to foist a siege mentality across Nigeria, decimate opposition, impose a totalitarian one-Party State and turn the country into a fiefdom

In any case, nothing in Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution relied upon by the President in the declaration grants him the exclusive powers to declare or execute the declaration of a state of emergency without recourse to the statutory approval of the National Assembly.

For the avoidance of doubt, Section 305 (2) provides that “The President shall immediately after the publication, transmit copies of the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation containing the proclamation including the details of the emergency to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, each of whom shall forthwith convene or arrange for a meeting of the House of which he is President or Speaker, as the case may be, to consider the situation and decide whether or not to pass a resolution approving the proclamation”.

Mr. President should recognize that his order to an unelected individual to forthwith take over government of Rivers State is illegal and a clear recipe for crisis, threat to the peace and stability of not only Rivers State but the entire nation.

For emphasis, Governor Fubara was democratically elected for a tenure of four years which tenure cannot be unconstitutionally abridged.

The PDP therefore cautions Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) to respect the Constitution and ensure that he does not take any action or step which is capable of derailing smooth democratic Governance in Rivers State. Nigeria is not under a military rule where the Governance of a State is by appointment by a junta.

BREAKING: Governor Sim Fubara Writes The People Of Rivers State.

 EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF RIVERS STATE

My dear Rivers People,

I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility and calm, as we navigate this unfortunate moment in our state’s political history.

Since assuming office as your Governor, all my actions and decisions have been guided by my constitutional oath of office and a great sense of duty.

We prioritized the protection of lives and property and ensured the continuous progress of our dear State.

Even in the face of the political impasse, we have remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law, putting the interest of our people above all else.

This was why, immediately after Mr. President’s intervention to broker peace, we did not hesitate to implement the agreed terms in good faith, including welcoming back commissioners who had previously resigned on their own volition.

Furthermore, we moved swiftly to comply with the Supreme Court's judgement immediately we received the certified true copy of the judgement to return the state to normalcy.

These steps were taken not for personal gains but to foster peace, unity and stability in our dear State.

Unfortunately, at every turn, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly frustrated our efforts, thus making genuine peace and progress difficult.

Our priorities remained the security of lives and property and advancing the well-being and prosperity of Rivers people.

Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance had continued, salaries have been paid, and great projects were being executed to move the State forward. Above all, Rivers State is safe, secure and peaceful under our watch.

At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive.

We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process.

God bless Rivers State.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Sir, Siminalayi Fubara, GSSR

Atiku Condemns Tinubu's State of Emergency in Rivers, Calls it 'Assault on Democracy

Atiku Condemns Tinubu's State of Emergency in Rivers, Calls it 'Assault on Democracy
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a "disgraceful" move that reeks of "political manipulation and bad faith." Atiku accused Tinubu of being a "vested partisan actor" in the state's crisis and blamed him for the "brazen security breaches" that led to the destruction of national infrastructure.

Atiku argued that Tinubu's administration has enabled or failed to prevent the chaos in Rivers, which has undone the hard-won peace secured by late President Umaru Yar'Adua. He condemned the move as an "assault on democracy" and an attempt to punish the people of Rivers State for political gain.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State has suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state's House of Assembly for six months. Atiku's statement comes as a strong rebuke to Tinubu's actions, which have been seen as a drastic measure to address the state's political crisis.

Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers, Suspends Governor and Deputy
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, for an initial period of six months. This decisive move aims to address the prolonged political crisis in the state.

In a nationwide broadcast, President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the situation in Rivers State, prompting him to take drastic measures to restore order and stability. The suspension of the governor, deputy governor, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to pave the way for a temporary takeover of the state's administration.

To oversee the state's affairs during this period, President Tinubu has appointed Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd.) as the Administrator of Rivers State. Gambo, a seasoned administrator and former Chief of Naval Staff, is expected to work closely with relevant stakeholders to restore peace, stability, and good governance in the state.

This development marks a significant escalation in the efforts to resolve the political impasse in Rivers State. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the state's residents and stakeholders will respond to this extraordinary measure.

How Drug Lords and Bandits Are Becoming Traditional Rulers in Nigeria – Obasanjo Exposes

How Drug Lords and Bandits Are Becoming Traditional Rulers in Nigeria – Obasanjo Exposes
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised alarm over the infiltration of Nigeria’s traditional leadership by criminals, drug addicts, bandits, and kidnappers, warning that the revered institution is losing its dignity and moral authority.

Obasanjo made this explosive revelation in his newly released book, Nigeria: Past and Future, unveiled last week. According to the elder statesman, the rapid multiplication of traditional rulers in Nigeria, many of whom lack the required moral standing, has weakened the institution, making it a breeding ground for societal decay.

Highlighting the disturbing trend, Obasanjo cited instances where traditional rulers have engaged in disgraceful acts, including election rigging.

“This is a great pity, and it has greatly contributed to Nigeria’s problems. How do we account for a traditional ruler snatching a ballot box at a polling unit and running away with it?” he queried.

The former president lamented that traditional rulers, once regarded as the custodians of culture and justice, are now part of the country’s governance crisis due to poor selection processes that allow criminals to assume royal positions.

Reflecting on the past, Obasanjo stated that traditional rulers were once revered and commanded honor, particularly in colonial and early post-independence Nigeria. However, he believes that the quality of traditional leadership has significantly declined.

“The class of traditional rulers with their distinction, honor, and dignity, as we knew them in the colonial days and early post-independence era, has been diluted and polluted,” he said.

Calling for urgent reforms, Obasanjo stressed the need to restore the dignity and value of traditional rulers in Nigeria. He insisted that they should be key players in national development rather than liabilities.

“That dignity, aura, and respect should be brought back. Traditional rulers should be an asset to Nigeria’s development and greatness, not a burden,” he declared.

Tinubu, Jandor Meet in Secret at Aso Rock, Sparking Speculation

Tinubu, Jandor Meet in Secret at Aso Rock, Sparking Speculation
President Bola Tinubu held a clandestine meeting with Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday. The meeting, which lasted from 2 pm to 4 pm, was not publicly disclosed, fueling speculation about its purpose.¹

Jandor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 Lagos State election, recently resigned from the PDP, citing "indiscipline and anti-party activities." His meeting with Tinubu has sparked rumors of a potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or a possible alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.

Sources close to the Presidency described the meeting as a "fence-mending" move, although the details of their discussion remain unclear. Jandor's visit to Tinubu comes after his recent meetings with former Heads of State, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as Atiku Abubakar, the PDP's presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

The secrecy surrounding the meeting has generated interest among political observers, who are eager to understand the implications of this unexpected encounter between Tinubu and Jandor.

Dangote Slashes Petrol Loading Cost to N815/Litre Amidst Price War

Dangote Slashes Petrol Loading Cost to N815/Litre Amidst Price War
In a move that's expected to spark a price war in the downstream oil sector, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced its petrol loading cost from N825 to N815 per litre. This development comes on the heels of a report that the landing cost of petrol imported into Nigeria dropped to N774.72 per litre, prompting predictions of a possible reduction in pump prices to around N800 per litre.

The refinery's decision to lower its loading cost is seen as a strategic move to maintain its market share, as marketers had begun to opt for imported products due to their lower pricing. Industry stakeholders anticipate that private fuel depots will respond by adjusting their prices downward to remain competitive.

This latest reduction is the second price cut implemented by Dangote Refinery in recent weeks, following a previous decrease from N890 to N825 per litre in late February. The move is expected to drive down petrol prices nationwide, ultimately impacting the overall cost of living in the country.

Tinubu Orders Cement Manufacturers to Revert to Old Prices Amidst Hike

Tinubu Orders Cement Manufacturers to Revert to Old Prices Amidst Hike
President Bola Tinubu has directed cement manufacturers, including Dangote and BUA, to revert to their old prices following a recent hike. This directive was conveyed by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during an inspection of the BUA cement factory in Sokoto on Thursday.¹

Although the president's directive did not specify a particular price, it aims to address the surge in cement prices that has affected the construction industry. Umahi emphasized that the cement companies can still improve their pricing to make the product more affordable for Nigerians.

The move is expected to provide relief to construction companies and individuals who have been struggling with the high cost of cement. However, it remains to be seen whether the cement manufacturers will comply with the president's directive and revert to their old prices.

Jubilation Again: Ilaji Resort Boss, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi Embarks on Concretization of Oke Elesin-Akanran Road

Jubilation Again: Ilaji Resort Boss, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi Embarks on Concretization of Oke Elesin-Akanran Road
In yet another demonstration of his commitment to community development, the Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland and Chief Executive Officer of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, Engr. Jubril Dotun Sanusi, has embarked on the concretization of the Oke Elesin-Akanran road.

This crucial intervention, aimed at easing the suffering of commuters and residents, began with the most hazardous stretch of Oke Elesin, after the popular Amuloko Market, extending towards Akanran.

Determined to support government efforts and enhance infrastructure in Ona Ara Local Government, Asiwaju of Ona Ara, Engr. Sanusi, has taken up this road project as a community service initiative. His goal is to concretize the road, making it more durable and motorable before the commencement of the second phase of the Olorunsogo-Dagbolu Road reconstruction, which is being sponsored by the Oyo State Government.

Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, Engr. Jubril Dotun Sanusi expressed deep concerns over the hardship caused by the deplorable state of the road. He emphasized that beyond the inconvenience to motorists and residents, the poor condition of the main road has crippled business activities and stifled economic growth in the Ona Ara axis.

"This road is vital to the economic prosperity of our people. When roads are bad, businesses suffer, transportation costs rise, and development is hindered. That is why I cannot stand by and watch our people struggle. This intervention is my way of ensuring that life is made easier for them while complementing the government's efforts to bring lasting development to our communities," he stated.

Residents, traders, and motorists have expressed profound gratitude to Engr. Jubril Dotun Sanusi for his unwavering commitment to infrastructure development and community progress. His selfless contributions continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of the people of Ona Ara and beyond.
