NBS Ranks Oyo Number One In The South As Makinde Hits 22,000+ Employment In Five Years.

NBS Ranks Oyo Number One In The South As Makinde Hits 22,000+ Employment In Five Years.
The Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has announced Oyo State as the most employment friendly State in the Southern part of Nigeria.

In a statement made by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, NBS, a Federal Government Agency made this declaration in the latest employment statistics published for 2024.

The document, according to the Commissioner, reveals a significant decline in Oyo State unemployment rate, recording an impressive 2.0%, thereby announcing Oyo State as leading in employment creation, surpassing 31 other States in the Federation including the FCT which recorded a 14.1% unemployment rate as at September 26, 2024.
According to the Commissioner, the NBS figure is not surprising because employment in the State has been consistently high-pitched.

Recently, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, announced the employment of 7,000 new staff.

Two weeks ago, the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, also announced the employment of 7,500 teachers and 3,000 non-teaching Staff.

This is in addition to the 5,000 Teachers employed to TESCOM by Gov. Makinde in his first term.

In the Health Sector, the State government just concluded the employment process of 375 personnel into the State Hospital Management Board, including Medical Doctors, Nurses, Specialist Consultants, Hospital Administrators, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, Physiotherapists and other junior cadre officers.

And as we speak, the employment of 791 staff into the Oyo State Civil Service Commission is ongoing.

In the same vein, the Seyi Makinde administration has effected the pardoning, reinstatement and promotion of 1,800 workers.

In a rare approach to governance, Governor Seyi Makinde had ensured that his performances in all sectors, including people's welfare and employment surpassed his first four years even when the administration is less than two years into the second term.

FG Proposes Drastic Overhaul Of FAAC Sharing Formula

FG Proposes Drastic Overhaul Of FAAC Sharing Formula
The federal government is proposing a major shift in the distribution of funds from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

This was revealed by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Oyedele disclosed that the federal government is set to take only 10 percent of the total FAAC allocations, while states and local governments will receive a combined 90 percent.

This represents a drastic departure from the current sharing formula, which allocates 52.68 percent to the federal government, 26.72 percent to states, and 20.60 percent to local governments.

Under the new proposal, Oyedele explained, the distribution formula for the states and local governments would include a clause stipulating that 60 percent of their share will be based on the principle of derivation.

In practice, this means if N100 is available for distribution from FAAC: The federal government will take N10, all 36 states will share N36 equally, and N54 will be distributed based on derivation, favoring states with higher resource generation.

This change in the sharing formula is part of broader reforms aimed at eliminating numerous “nuisance taxes” and streamlining the tax collection process. Oyedele noted that the federal government had to make this concession to get states on board with a centralized and more efficient tax collection system.

“The new approach not only simplifies tax collection but also lays the foundation for fiscal federalism, giving states and local governments more autonomy over their revenues,” Oyedele said.

However, questions remain about whether the federal government will also reduce its share of personal income tax (PIT), which is traditionally collected by states.

Oyedele pointed out that the federal government has long sought to centralize PIT collection, which he estimates could generate up to N50 trillion annually, providing N5 trillion for the federal government under the new 10 percent rule.

Meanwhile, the federal government plans to rely more on internally generated revenue (IGR) from its Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for its revenue streams.

Oyedele noted that MDAs are already generating almost N1 trillion monthly for the government, with significant potential for growth once existing loopholes and leakages are addressed.

The proposed reforms represent a bold step towards decentralizing revenue collection and promoting a more balanced fiscal structure in Nigeria.

However, the success of these reforms will depend on how they are implemented and whether key stakeholders can reach a consensus on the new distribution framework.

The full impact of this proposed tax overhaul will likely be closely monitored in the coming months as discussions continue between the federal government and other tiers of government.

Stalemate as Stubborn Peoples' Elephants Hold Oluyole Warriors

Stalemate as Stubborn Peoples' Elephants Hold Oluyole Warriors
Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, were on Sunday held to a goalless draw by Enyimba FC of Aba in a Matchday six encounter played at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

It was a day the Oluyole Warriors were undone by poor marksmanship, having dominated both halves of the game.

The coach Gbenga Ogunbote tutored lads were undoubtedly at their best, pushing hard on the visitors, who however escaped defeat owing to stout defending and the inability of the hosts to take their chances.

While goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal faced few threats from the visitors, the defence quartet of Desmond Ojietifian, Aghahowa Alex, Utin Ikouwem and skipper Gali Falke took control of the Enyimba's forward, spearheaded by ex 3SC striker, Ifeanyi Ihemekwele.

Enyimba's goalie, Ani Ozoemena and his defenders had a tough time curtailing the goal hungry Warriors, whose performance in the encounter was well applauded by their vociferous supporters and fans .

Enyimba players and officials, heaved a sight of relief as referee Edwin Chime Anyanwu brought proceedings to an end, celebrating the barren draw.

The draw leaves Shooting Stars with six points from six games and the Oluyole Warriors will next face Rivers United in a midweek cracker, slated for Thursday in Port Harcourt.

Nigeria Facing Worsening Food Crisis Like Yemen, Ethiopia, Calls For Urgent Intervention - World Bank

Nigeria Facing Worsening Food Crisis Like Yemen, Ethiopia, Calls For Urgent Intervention - World Bank
The World Bank has stated that Nigeria is facing a worsening food security crisis, with over one million additional people experiencing severe food insecurity in 2024 compared to the previous year.

This was contained in the World Bank’s Food Security Update Report released recently while highlighting that countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia and Yemen have seen a significant rise in the number of people facing acute food shortages.

“Conversely, some countries saw improvements. Nations such as Afghanistan, Guatemala, and Kenya reported declines in food insecurity, with more than one million fewer people facing acute food crises, although these countries remained in significant food crisis situations.

“On the other hand, 18 countries experienced worsening situations due to factors including intensified conflict and climate-related shocks, such as droughts. Notable examples include Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Yemen, each witnessing an increase of more than one million people facing high levels of food insecurity from the previous year,” the report read.

Nigeria’s growing crisis is said to be a combination of climate-induced issues and socio-political instability in various regions, the report noted.

“In Nigeria, an estimated 1.6 million hectares of land have been inundated, including 342,650 hectares of cropland, affecting 685,770 vulnerable individuals. In Mali, 344,000 people were affected and 1.6 million hectares of land flooded, including nearly 500,000 hectares of cultivated land.

“Cameroon, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo have also faced flooding, and northern and northeastern Nigeria and Ghana are experiencing dry spells, with adverse effects on crop production and thus food insecurity.

“In total, floods and droughts have affected approximately 3.5 million people, who require emergency support. It is estimated that $50m is needed to help 760,200 communities meet their basic food needs.”

According to the report, domestic food price inflation in Nigeria remains among the highest globally, with food prices increasing by 37.5% year-on-year as of August 2024. This price surge has strained household incomes, making it increasingly difficult for low-income families to afford basic food items.

Meanwhile, the World Bank called for urgent intervention to address the immediate food needs of affected populations while also focusing on long-term solutions to improve resilience against climate shocks.

2024 Igbo Ora Twins Festival: Oyo Targets Another UNESCO Cultural Heritage Designation

2024 Igbo Ora Twins Festival: Oyo Targets Another UNESCO Cultural Heritage Designation

...Promise to complete Ido/Eruwa road construction

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has expressed the hope that in line with his administration’s zeal to expand the state’s economy through tourism, the Igbo Ora Festival of Twins and Multiple Births will be promoted to gain world acclaim as a UNESCO World Heritage.

Governor Makinde stated this on Saturday, while speaking at the annual World Twins Festival, themed; “Twinning for Love, Unity and National Economic Reorientation,” held at the Methodist Grammar School, Igbo Ora.

The governor said that his government would continue to promote the festival because of its uniqueness and importance to Ibarapaland and Oyo State in general.

He added that his government would also accelerate efforts on developing necessary infrastructure to support the drive, stating that the government would double its efforts to ensure that the ongoing rehabilitation of Ido/Eruwa road is completed.

Governor Makinde, who was represented by his deputy, Barr. Bayo Lawal, pledged his government’s continuous support for the festival to attract more investors, stating that this would be achieved through improvement of facilities and creation of an enabling environment needed for tourism to thrive in the state.

The event was organised by the Igbo Ora Community Foundation and Ibarapa Central Local Government in conjunction with Oyo State Government and the Twins World Creation Intercontinental.

Governor Makinde said: “What we are doing today is something that is worth celebrating. You can see that we have a lot of people who came here from far and wide for this event.

“Research has shown that 10 per cent of births in Igbo Ora are twins. We should ask ourselves why it is like that. But if we know that such is what God has blessed this town with, we are supposed to  guard that uniqueness jealously.

“We should also know that twins are special children from God. It is the same foods they eat here that are being eaten in other places but they have their uniqueness of multiple births in Ibarapaland.

“The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism has said a lot about this event and I want to tell you that Oyo State government is making efforts to upgrade the celebration of this event to UNESCO standard, which will make people come all the way from America, Asia and other continents of the world. So, the arrangement is ongoing.”

Speaking further, the governor charged parents of twins and multiple births to guide and take care of them well towards attaining their goals in life, while he also encouraged the immediate community to embrace and celebrate the festival by creating a permanent venue that would serve as a monument for the important festival.

“Also, we have to, as parents of twins, guide them well towards attaining their goals in life.

“I also want to encourage this community, through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, to look for a parcel of land that will serve as a venue for this celebration subsequently. They will come and inspect and the government will give necessary support so that we won’t continue to make use of a field.

“Part of what will add to the colour of this celebration is to have good roads that lead to the venue of the event, which would encourage those coming for the event to have a smooth experience on their way.

“We are working on the Ido-Eruwa Road. I passed the route and I paid attention to the current state of the road. I can assure you that we will redouble our efforts to ensure that the road is fixed quickly,” the governor added.

In his address, the chairman on the occasion and Member representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Abass Adigun, said “the annual festival does not only showcase the premium placed on culture and tradition by the Oyo State Government but also shows the values and the uniqueness of Igbo Ora Community in the state and all over the African continent.”

He lauded Governor Makinde for his efforts in putting the festival on the global map, thereby attracting tourists and investors to develop the economy of the state.

Also in his address, the Olu of Igbo Ora, Oba Jimoh Titiloye, appreciated Governor Makinde for promoting the twins festival as a platform for tourism and an avenue for the expansion of the state’s economy.

Oyo State’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, said the festival is unique, as it has incorporated twins from all the geopolitical zones in the state, with the target of entering the Guinness Book of World Records and also being enlisted by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

He added that the festival has promoted culture and tourism in the state, urging residents of Ibarapaland to embrace the festival and accommodate all the states in Nigeria.

In their speech, the Twins Festival Consultants, Ambassador Taiwo and Kehinde Oguntoye, also appreciated Governor Makinde for being a lover and promoter of creative and innovative cultural adventures and tourism.

Giving the vote of thanks, the Member representing Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North Federal Constituency, in the House of Representatives, Dr Anthony Adepoju, expressed optimism that the twins festival would soon be on the global map to attract more investors to boost the economy of the state.

Highlights of the event include unveiling of twins’ statue at Igbotikale Roundabout; Igbo Ora Twins’ Parade; Twins’ Talent Show and Twins’ Appellation, among others.

The event had in attendance traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and top government functionaries, among others.
