Oyo Gov't Mandates Residents To Vaccinate Dogs, Cats Against Rabies

Oyo Gov't Mandates Residents To Vaccinate Dogs, Cats Against Rabies

The Oyo State Government has mandated residents of the state to vaccinate their dogs and cats against the dreaded rabies disease.

The mandate was contained in a release issued today, by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, drawing the residents’ attention to the importance of such vaccination.

Recall that this year’s World Rabies Day was marked on September 28, 2024, with the theme “Breaking Rabies Boundary.”

Oyo State marked the event with a program that brought together veterinary professionals, pet owners, and community members in a united front against this deadly disease.

Olasunkanmi said, “All dogs and cats owners who have not vaccinated their pets should do so immediately by visiting the veterinary centres in the state”.

Barrister Olasunkanmi hinted that from research, majority of rabies cases involve dog bites hence the present Government in the State is sensitizing the general public on the needs to keep their dogs or animals in confined areas and vaccinate them regularly.

He said that it is against the Oyo State Dog Law 2019 to allow dogs to rove around without its owner.

According him, the best way to prevent rabies in humans is by vaccination of dogs and cats, at least once a year.

The Commissioner, said human rabies death according to research is 100 percent preventable with prompt vaccination of dogs and cats.

He explained that having discovered that over 70 percent of infectious diseases in humans originate from animals- Zoonotic, Oyo State Government has embarked on an all inclusive method to control rabies and other zoonotics diseases.

Olaleye said the government has executed free mass vaccination of cattle under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative.

He added that the Government in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Livestock Productivity and Reseilince Support Project (L-Press) on 19th of August, 2024, trained veterinary Officers.

Olasunkanmi however added that refusal to vaccinate dogs and pets annually is an offence against the Oyo State Dog Law 2019, with fine of Two Hundred and Fifty Naira (#250,000) only or six months imprisonment or both.

In a related development, the Chairman Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Oyo State Chapter, Dr. John Famoyin commended Oyo State Government for its various efforts in preventing zoonotics diseases noting that September 28th every year is the World Rabies Day.

He however urged Government at all levels to ensure implementation of Dog Law.

The country received its Freedom Charter on 1 October, 1960, tradition suggests and our hearts require that we render humble devotion to Almighty God for the mercies bestowed upon us by His goodness.

A great Nation must move on. Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or to lose. So, I ask you to join us in that resolve. More than any generation before us, we have cause to be worried, on this Independence Day. Our harvests are not bountiful, our factories are not flourishing, our homes are not safe, our defences are not secure. We are no longer living in peace.

Dr Yinka Folahan stated that all of us have lived through 9 years of this present tragedy under the leadership of APC that none of us will ever forget. We are not given the divine wisdom to answer why this has been.

I come before you to ask your help, to ask your strength, to ask your prayers that God may provide a good leader come 2027.

The move to draft NNPP National leader, HE Sen Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into 2027 presidential race and win will give a good account of his stewardship by utilizing our resources in the service of mankind. May we have the vision and courage to accept him so that he can discharge honourably the responsibilities inherent in his strength by consecrating himself the attainment of a better Nigeria

And, finally, Dr Yinka Folahan ask that we remember our dear nation Nigeria each day in our prayers so that we can have a new day when peace is more secure, when justice is more universal, when freedom is stronger in every home.
