The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, is dead.


A family source revealed on Wednesday that Akeredolu died in Lagos.

“Akeredolu is dead; he died in Lagos,” the source said.

“They were looking for dialysis machines to be sent to his secret location in Lagos last week.”


He was 67 years old.


The ailing governor returned to Nigeria in September following a three-month medical leave in Germany and only recently proceeded on another one after he was directed by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.


His deputy, Aiyedatiwa has been standing in as Acting Governor.


Following his return to Nigeria in September, Akeredolu stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and tried to govern his state from there, leading to public outrage.


On July 9, Akeredolu’s wife, Betty announced the suspension of activities lined up to celebrate her 70th birthday.


The Ondo first lady announced the suspension of the activities in Twitter posts after questions were raised over plans to have a fanfare despite her husband’s ill health.


“Hello Family and Friends. This is to inform you that all activities lined up to mark my 70th birthday are hereby suspended till further notice due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this development.”


“Nevertheless, be assured that I will be celebrated in style upon my return. Thank you for your understanding. I remain Arabinrin a.k.a Ada Owere I,” she tweeted

Oyo state Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has called on Christians to follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ by showing love to others and cooperating with the leadership of the society.

The governor equally called for more prayers for the state and for Nigeria, stating that the challenges facing the country are not insurmountable with prayers, patience and decisive actions

Governor Makinde stated this in his Christmas Message to residents of the state

According to the governor, it is understandable that the country is going through tough times but residents of Oyo State must believe in God and trust in the government

He said: “I wish all residents of Oyo State a Merry Christmas

“Christmas presents us with the opportunity to relive the message taught by the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and to follow the path

“In his birth, Jesus Christ taught us the lessons of love and humility and through his life, we were taught the lessons on sacrificial living and respect for lawful authority

“I encourage our people to emulate Christ by spreading love and reaching out to others at this trying time

“As an administration, we are not unaware of the tough times the country is going through but we are doing everything possible to mitigate the effects of the economic hardship

“Only last week, I signed into law the 2024 Budget of Economic Recovery with a view to beginning the implementation that will rejuvenate our economy and reenergise our people economically

“But as the saying goes, tough times never last, tough people do, I urge our people to be prayerful and to support our government to beat the situation

Oyo state Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has asked political parties participating in the April 2024 council polls to commence campaign activities even as the final list of candidates would be released by the commission in January. 


The chairman of the commission, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju,SAN. Who stated this during a stakeholders' consultative meeting with political parties, noted that the commission would consider the use of voter's card in the electoral process and that talks were still ongoing to get approval from INEC in deploying BVAS for the local government elections. 


Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju,SAN.Assured representatives of various political parties at the meeting that the commission would not renege in its goals of ensuring a near perfect process that would enable every vote count during the election.


The chairman of OYSIEC equally admonished political parties who would be interested in substituting candidates or contemplating whether to participate in the election to quickly do so before the end of the year 2023 while charging them to eschew violence or defamatory statement as they commence their various campaigns.


Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju,SAN.Also hinted that the commission had begun discussions and partnership arrangement with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for voters education, awareness and sensitization.


In a remark during the meeting, honourable Demola Oke from NNPP appreciated the commission for the warm reception accorded their party candidates during the screening, urging the commission to maintain its pattern of fairness to all. 


The highlight of the meeting was a question and answer session to give political stakeholders clarity of the process ahead of the election.

JUST-IN: Ibadan Court Sentences Investment Fraudster Crime Alert to 75 Years In Prison

 


Justice Bayo Taiwo of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan, last Thursday, convicted and sentenced Olaniyan Gbenga Amos to seventy-five, 75, years imprisonment for multiple investment fraud.


According to a statement by EFCC’s Head, Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, he was convicted alongside his firm, Detorrid Heritage Investment Limited.


They were prosecuted on 35-count count charges by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, bordering on obtaining by false pretences, contrary to Section 1(1) (a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.


Count 35 of the charge reads: “That you Olaniyan Gbenga Amos and Detorrid Heritage Investment Limited on or about the 20th of February, 2020, at Ibadan, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, with intent to defraud obtained the sum of N1,540,000 (One million, Five Hundred and Forty Thousand only) from Akinlabi Qasim Dada, when you falsely represented to him that the money was meant for registration and investment with Crime Alert Security Network with a promise of 30% return on investment in six weeks (30 working days), which representation you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence of obtaining money under false pretence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.”


Another Charge read: “That you OLANIYAN GBENGA AMOS and DETORRID HERITAGE INVESTMENT LIMITED on or about 27th of August, 2020, at Ibadan, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud obtained the sum of N170,000 (One Hundred and Seventy Thousand Naira) only from Alhaji Mukaila Odunayo when you falsely represented to him that the money is meant for registration and investment with Crime Alert Security Network with a promise of 30% return on Investment in 6 weeks (30 working days), which representations you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence of obtaining money under false pretence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.”


The defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges when they were read to him.


In view of his plea, EFCC Counsel, Sanusi Galadanchi opened the case on February 17, 2022, and called six witnesses, tendered eight exhibits, and closed the case on January 24, 2023. At the end of the prosecution’s case, the defendant filed a “no case submission” which was overruled by the court. Consequently, the defendant opened and closed his case by calling three witnesses. Thereafter, Justice Taiwo reserved judgment in the matter till December 14, 2023.


At the resumption of the trial on Thursday, December 14, 2023, Justice Taiwo convicted and sentenced the defendant to fifteen (15) years imprisonment on each of counts 27, 32, 33, 34, and 35 but discharged and acquitted the defendant on counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8, 9; 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19; 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29; 30 and 31 respectively.

Furthermore, the court ordered that the sentence should run concurrently and the defendant should alsorestitute the victims.


Amos has three other ongoing trials before Federal and State High Courts in Ibadan, Oyo State.


The convict’s journey to the Correctional Centre began when he was arrested and arraigned before Justice Bayo Taiwo on December 14, 2021, by the EFCC. He swindled several individuals through fake investment ventures that led to the loss of money to the tune of over N1 billion by investors.


Amos deliberately reneged to meet up with the agreements he made with his investors, by not paying the agreed “Return on Investment” to those who invested in “Crime Alert Security Network”, a security investment programme under the umbrella of his firm.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has brokered an agreement between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the 27 Rivers lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC)..


This follows weeks of political tension in the state due to a face-off between the governor and his predecessor, who is the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).


The meeting, which was held at the instance of the president, saw both factions make concessions. Former governor Peter Odili was among the attendees at the closed-door meeting.


The following are the resolutions agreed:


After a meeting with all the stakeholders of Rivers State with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The resolution are as follows


1. ALL matters instituted in the courts by the Governor of RiversState, Sir Fubara, and his team, in respect of the political crisis in Rivers State, shall be withdrawn IMMEDIATELY


2. ALL impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor of Rivers State by the Rivers State House of Assembly should be dropped immediately


3. The leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly as led by the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule shall be recognized alongside the 27 members who resigned from the PDP


4. The remunerations and benefits of ALL members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and their staff must be reinstated immediately and the Governor of Rivers State shall henceforth not interfere with the full funding of the Rivers State House of Assembly


5. The Rivers State House of Assembly shall choose where they want to sit and conduct their legislative business without interference and/or hindrance from the Executive arm of government


6. The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Fubara, shall re-present the state budget to a properly constituted Rivers State House of Assembly


7. The names of ALL commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council who resigned their appointments because of the political crisis in the state should be resubmitted to the House of Assembly for approval


8. There should NOT be a caretaker committee for the local governments in Rivers State. The dissolution of the Local Government administration is null and void and shall not be recognized.

Former Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Oyo state and Chairmanship candidate of the party ahead of the coming 2024 Local Government election, Akeem Olatunji has commissioned a newly donated motorized Borehole Project in Oluyole.


Olatunji commissioned the Borehole project facilitated by a philanthropist who prefers not to be mentioned on Sunday morning (today.


The project was however, facilitated by a political ally and associate of Engr Akeem Olatunji,  Alhaji K. K. Olayiwola, to Jaloke Ifesowapo Development Community in Oluyole Local Government.


Consequently, the Community in an euphoria of excitement declared it’s support for Olatunji’s election bid as the next executive Chairman of Oluyole while endorsing him as their sole candidate at the coming Council poll.







In his brief remarks, shortly before commissioning the project for community use, Olatunji said, the gesture was not only timely but is also in line with Governor Seyi Makinde’s Sustainable Development Agenda for grassroots development.


While commending the donor of the project, Olatunji noted that the world has gone past people waiting for government to provide all their community needs adding that no one government could complete the work of governance.


He added the popularity and general acceptability of Governor Seyi Makinde across the length and breadth of the state was occasioned by his passion for the people via countless philanthropic gestures via community development, human capacity building and empowerment even before contesting for the Governorship seat.

He urged privileged members of the society not to neglect their communities in term of support stressing that his administration as the Council Chairman, if elected would work closely with Community Development Associations to ensure all ten wards have a feel of governemtn presence.


While urging the Community to protect the project jealously as their own and ensure its well maintained, he assured that, he would domesticate Makinde’s Sustainable Development Action Plan of Govenor Seyi Makinde to achieve even spread of development across Oluyole Local Government.


Earlier, the Chairman of the Landlord and Landlady Association in the Community, Mr Ola Akande, thanked the facilitator and donor of the project while equally assuring that the community would make good use and protect the project jealously.


Others present at the project commissioning were elders of the community as represented by Aare Muritala Oyemiji Akanji, Alh Rauf Lawal, Alh Sulaiman Ariyo, other members of the Landlord and Landlady Association as well as Ward 7 PDP Councillorship Candidate, Hon Ademola Dauda, Ward 7 PDP Chairman, Alhaji Iyan and others.


Meanwhile, Olatunji, who had earlier commissioned a newly constructed community Primary School built by Adeyeri Ajogbelede Community last week has continued to gain endorsements from various communities, landlord associations, religious and traditional leaders across the ten wards of Oluyole Local Government ahead of the forthcoming 2024 Council poll
