Morocco 2024: NFF praises Efih’s mental strength as girls tackle Cape Verde in Praia

Morocco 2024: NFF praises Efih’s mental strength as girls tackle Cape Verde in Praia

The Nigeria Football Federation has described as ‘admirable’ the mental toughness displayed by midfielder Peace Efih in helping the Super Falcons to a five-goal spanking of the senior women national team of Cape Verde in Abuja on Thursday.

Efih’s biological mother breathed her last 48 hours before the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations final round, first leg encounter, but the player was her hard-as-nails self in defensive midfield as she paired captain Rasheedat Ajibade and petite Deborah Abiodun to supply the ammunition that dismantled the visitors at the MKO Abiola National Stadium.

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau said: “We must commend, specially, the mental strength and fortitude of Peace Efih, who lost her mother two days ago but opted to remain in camp and help the team to win well today. Hers is an example of a super patriot who will give everything for the good of the motherland.

“The loss of a parent is a calamity, a thing of sadness and sorrow. Many other persons would have cracked and packed bags to leave the camp to go and mourn, but Peace decided it was better to honour her mother’s memory with a great performance that has taken the team closer to another appearance at the Women AFCON. She deserves our praise.”

Efih’s toughness and productivity earned the Falcons a 5-0 win in Abuja, making Tuesday’s return leg in the island nation all but a mere formality for the nine-time champions.

JUST IN: FG Reveals Number Of Delegates Sponsored To Dubai For COP28

Amid raging criticism over Nigeria’s large delegation to Dubai for the COP28 climate summit, the Federal Government said the Federal Federal Government only sponsored 422 delegates out of the 1,411 Nigerians reported to be at the conference.

A source in the Presidency had on Sunday night told Daily Trust that the number of delegates sponsored by the government was less than 100.

But the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Monday said 422 delegates were chosen from the Presidency, National Council on Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, All Ministries, Office of the Vice President, National Assembly, and federal parastatals and agencies.

The statement, titled ‘Re: Nigeria At Cop-28’ noted, “It is imperative to point out that the overall Nigerian delegation to COP28 comprises government-sponsored (Federal and State Governments) and non-government-sponsored participants (from private companies to NGOs, CSOs, Media, academia, etc).

“The Federal Government-funded delegation is made up of a total of 422 persons: National Council on Climate Change (32); Federal Ministry of Environment (34); All Ministries (167); Presidency (67); Office of the Vice President (9); National Assembly (40); and Federal Parastatals/Agencies (73).

“As the biggest economy and most populous country in Africa, with a substantial extractive economy and extensive vulnerability to climate change, Nigeria has a significant stake in climate action, and our active and robust participation at COP is therefore not unwarranted.”

Meanwhile, the clarification by the minister came after the outrage that greeted the revelation that Nigeria had one of the highest delegations to the conference, despite the rising poverty and hunger across the country.

We Were Unlucky in Home Draw Against Heartland - Ogunbote

We Were Unlucky in Home Draw Against Heartland - Ogunbote
Technical Adviser of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Gbenga Ogunbote, has described as unfortunate, the goalless draw recorded by his side against the visiting Heartland FC of Owerri.

Thousands of the supporters and fans of the Oluyole Warriors watched as their darling team dominated proceedings throughout the matchday eleven tie, but ended up wasting all the numerous chances that came their way.

In his post match comments, the Oracle described the result as unfortunate, blaming it on the inability of his players to make use of the chances created.

"I think it's one of the moments in the game, this is a game we deserved to win honestly, but our inability to convert our chances robbed us the victory today, we will take the positives from it and move on" stated Ogunbote.

On the conversion of chances, the gaffer, who hinted that his team did not underrate the visitors, said the team will continue to work on it

"Even if we had scored ten goals today, we will still not stop working on the art of goal scoring, we will go back and do the needful to ensure that we take our chances".

The 3SC chief tactician said the result had nothing to do with the couple of changes made in the team for the game, stressing that those changes were necessitated by the circumstances on ground.

"Every player was registered to play. Some of our players have knocks, and were not available for selection, so all the ones that played, did their best, but unfortunately, we were unable to convert our chances".

Ahead of Wednesday's southwest derby against Sunshine Stars in Akure, the ex Lobi Stars sweat merchant, said his team will be going for something positive from the game but prayed for a level praying ground.

FG Working Hard On Digital Switchover That Won’t Fail—Minister

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has explained that the Digital Switch Over (DSO) project has not been in operation because the government was working hard to ensure the success of the blueprint when eventually rolled out.

He said NTA was a key stakeholder in the DSO project and, hence, was expected to play a prominent role in the success.

According to him, the country was on the path of “The most ambitious socio-economic growth plans ever” with the efforts being put in by the present government.

He encourages the NTA “To foster a culture of creativity and inclusivity; embrace the diversity of ideas within this organization, for it is through open dialogue and collaboration that we can overcome challenges and achieve our shared vision for the NTA.”

Shooting Stars 0-0 Heartland: Goal- shy Oluyole Warriors Held at Home

Shooting Stars 0-0 Heartland: Goal- shy Oluyole Warriors Held at Home

For the first time this season, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, failed to grab all three points as they were held to a goalless draw by Heartland FC of Owerri.

The result was not a true reflection of the game as the Oluyole Warriors had the game under control but were unable to convert all the scoring chances they created

Coach Gbenga Ogunbote handed Gafar Olafimihan and Enaruna Michael starting shirts for the first time this season, while golakeeper Ovunda Darlintin returned to duty after missing the last five games due to injury

A sign that the maximum points will elude the homers showed during the opening minutes of the game as the Stars unluckily had their numerous efforts missing the target

The second half turned out to be the same as the visitors soaked the pressure from the Ibadan soccer lords.

Both Kareem Ayinde Ademola and Tosin Olawale, who were introduced in the second half, were equally not lucky enough as their efforts also failed to break the deadlock, thus ending the tie nil all.

The draw leaves Shooting Stars on the fifth position with 18 points.

Up next for the Oluyole Warriors is a trip to Akure for a midweek cracker against rivals, Sunshine Stars FC, with the Southwest derby billed for the Ondo State Sports Complex.
