"With my Technical Crew, we will ensure we assemble a formidable team that can withstand any test and achieve the task given to us, and also be able to renew the victory hopes of the Solid Miners' supporters and fans alike."

Club Chairman, Dr. Othman Ibrahim Ahmed, said the arrival of Coach Adams Usman will accentuate the beginning of a new era, with a totally "new style of play."

Makinde Tasks Police to Review Daytime Roadblock Strategy

Makinde Tasks Police to Review Daytime Roadblock Strategy

- Pledges continued support

Oyo State governor, 'Seyi Makinde, has challenged the Nigeria Police to review the daytime roadblock strategy they deploy in manning the state.

The governor gave this charge on Wednesday while receiving the new Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone XI, comprising Oyo and Osun states, AIG Paul Odama, who paid him a courtesy visit in Ibadan.

Governor Makinde, who maintained that the police had been playing a stabilising role in the polity, stated that the roadblocks could impede international investors as it gave the perception of a state at war.  According to him, the number of roadblocks on major highways in Oyo State needed to be reviewed in order to improve the ease of doing business.

He suggested that officers could easily communicate from a central location using technology.

He equally praised the officers and men of the Oyo State Police Command for the great job they have been doing as he emphasised the challenging nature of policing the state.

He said, “If you are going from here to Kishi, you will probably spend maybe five hours on the road, and we share an international border with the Republic of Benin.”

The Governor added, “We are not relenting in supporting the security agencies. We have bought a new set of vehicles and gadgets that we want to distribute to the police and other agencies too.”

He said that his administration would continue to foster cooperation and a cordial relationship with the police.

“We are really alive to our responsibilities in securing the state, and we will extend that to the zone,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, AIG Odama appreciated the governor for supporting the Oyo State Police Command through regular donations of security vehicles and communication gadgets.

He stated that the governor's support is exemplary, as, according to him, no other state in the country has done so well in terms of providing welfare to the command.

He assured the governor that the Oyo State Police would continue to work hard and put in their best in securing the state. He further solicited more support for Zone XI which he said is 60% Oyo State and 40% Osun State. He said, “Like Oliver Twist, we will ask for more because I know you will assist.”

Promise Fulfilled: 1533 LAUTECH Students Resume in Iseyin

Promise Fulfilled: 1533 LAUTECH Students Resume in Iseyin

One Thousand, Five Hundred and Thirty-Three (1533) 200 Level students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso will resume at the Iseyin Campus, by the end of October, 2023.

This is in fulfilment of the promise made by Governor Seyi Makinde during the commissioning of the Iseyin campus, last month.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Tuesday, the college of Agricultural Science and Renewable Natural Resources, will begin the second semester in Iseyin on October 23, 2023.

The Commissioner recalled that his counterpart in the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Saliu Adelabu has held series of meetings with the Pro- Chancellor, Prof. Deji Omole and the Ag. Vice-chancellor to ensure the realisation of the students' resumption.

According to him, the resumption is significant because since April, 2023 when Oyo State Government announced the movement of the Agriculture Faculty to Iseyin, commencement of lecture for the 200 level students will now formally begin.

Last week Thursday, the Ag. Vice-chancellor, Prof. Rasaq Olatunde Kalilu led the institution's management team, to a meeting with stakeholders, where community leaders pledged their absolute support for the resumption and promised, to do all in their power to ensure comfortable stay of the coming students.

Prince Oyelade said agreement was reached on affordable accommodation, transportation and security measures in anticipation of their resumption.

Some of the lecturers, who may not secure immediate accomodation within Iseyin township, have made arrangements, to come from their Ogbomoso base on daily basis.

This is made feasible, because the newly constructed 76km Ogbomoso-Iseyin road, is 55 minutes drive.

The Commissioner recalled that the first semester officially ended on October 3, 2023

FG to start home delivery of passports next year

The Federal Government has announced that Nigerians will have the option of getting their passports delivered to them at home, offices, and other places of choice from the beginning of next year.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the 2023 University of Lagos International Week.

Ojo said;

“We have commenced the automation of our end-to-end passport application process, and we have given a timeline from which Nigerians will begin to experience the ‘sweet experience.

“By implication, Nigerians will not need to wait longer than two weeks before they get their passport.

“By January next year, Nigerians will be able to complete this application process online, and by February next year, with collaboration and partnership with other relevant stakeholders, Nigerians will have their passports delivered to their homes, offices, and other locations of their choice.

“This, of course, would be extended to our visa application process. We are deploying technology throughout the entire process to make it as seamless as possible. To achieve this, we have set everything into motion to open more visa application centres across the world.

“In this regard, we are also working on strengthening our visa-on-arrival policy. We are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to enforce the principle of the doctrine of reciprocity, and a committee has been set up in the ministry to achieve this.”

Ojo also said that the integrity of travel documents would be restored via data harmonisation. He said;

“Identity is who we are, what we are, and what we live for. But today, what we have is a duplication of our registration.

“Arguably, Nigeria is the only country I know that has a BVN for the bank, the international passport, the NIN, SIM card registration for telecos, and so on all of which request your data. The integrity of our travel documents must be restored through the harmonisation of our data.”

The Road to Good Governance is the Path Less Travelled From: His Excellency Engr Sir Dsc GSSRS KJW Abiodun Seyi Makinde FNSE
October is Nigeria’s independence month, presenting another opportunity to reflect on nation-building and good governance. So, it was fitting for the Oyo State Government to hold an executive retreat where we talked about how to move Oyo State forward.

It was an opportunity to share my vision for Oyo State and receive feedback from the team on how much of this vision they understand and can articulate. Our interactions again showed how we cannot follow the “popular” political path if we want to achieve good governance. If we agree that it is madness to do things the same way over and over and hope to achieve different results, then we cannot do things the same way we have always done them. We must choose to be different.

I have often been accused of running a populist government. My response is that if by populist, they mean commonsensical, driven by data, science and logic, then they may be right. However, a populist politician would pander to the populace and take palliative measures to look good. This is a course I have never taken. I chose the path less travelled.

When we came into office in 2019, we could have put all our resources into rehabilitating roads in Ibadan. That would have been a populist action. Ibadan has 11 local government areas and the majority of the voting population in the State. But, in choosing the path less travelled, we focused on the bigger picture. We reconstructed the 65 km Moniya-Ijaiye-Iseyin Road, knowing that linking Ibadan to Oke-Ogun would attract big businesses.

We pushed the envelope further by prioritising opening all other zones to investment instead of limiting investments to Ibadan alone.

Governor Seyi Makinde at the Oyo State Government Executive Leadership Retreat 2023
And so, my message to the leaders at the retreat was that they should see the bigger picture, key into it and then sell that vision to their teams. Not everyone will be happy with our methods, but most are happy about the outcomes. This is why we won our re-election by a landslide 63% of total votes cast. We cannot afford to let our people down.

I am also pleased to see that the data supports the fact that our policies and actions are beneficial to Oyo State in the long term. A recent socio-economic scorecard of States in Nigeria conducted by Analysts Data Services and Resources placed Oyo State in third place among the 36 States and FCT. Of course, we have also noted the areas where we scored below average and will continue to work towards improving.

On that note, let me mention that having set everything in motion to interconnect all zones, including embarking on the construction of the Ibadan Circular Road, we can now give more attention to Ibadan. We will be reconstructing some inner roads in Ibadan instead of just taking palliative measures. We have already advertised for bids from contractors for these projects. This costs us more in the short term but will lead to long-term cost savings and benefits.

I haven’t shared my reading in a while. This does not mean I have not been reading. Let’s talk about my reading in my next newsletter.

However, Governor Seyi Makinde charges the committee to submit its recommendations in four weeks time.
