FG Confirms First Case Of Anthrax Disease In Nigeria

The Federal Government has confirmed the first case of Anthrax in Nigeria after disclosing on Monday that the disease was detected in a farm in Niger State.

Making this known in a statement on Monday, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that it “is deeply concerned to announce the confirmation of an anthrax case in Niger State, Nigeria.”

It added that “On 14th of July, 2023 the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria was notified of animals manifesting symptoms of a suspected case of anthrax in a farm in Suleja, Niger State.

“The case was in a multi-specie animal farm comprising of cattle, sheep and goats located at Gajiri, along Abuja-Kaduna expressway Suleja LGA Niger State, where some of the animals had symptoms including oozing of blood from their body openings – anus, nose, eyes and ears.

“A Rapid Response team comprising of federal and state One Health Professional Team visited the farm to conduct preliminary investigations and collected samples from the sick animals

“Subsequent laboratory tests by the National Veterinary Research Institute laboratory confirmed the diagnosis, marking the first recorded case of anthrax in Nigeria in recent years and after the report of an outbreak of anthrax in Northern Ghana a few weeks ago.”

According to the statement, all animals affected have died.

The Ministry had a few weeks ago communicated the risk of incursion of Anthrax into the country, following confirmed outbreaks in Ghana and other countries in West Africa.

Anthrax is a major zoonotic disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which primarily affects animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats but can also infect humans, who come into direct contact with infected animals or consume contaminated animal products.

The disease can also be transmitted through contaminated pasture, feed and water.

The clinical signs of Anthrax in animals include sudden death and blood oozing from natural body openings (nose, ear, mouth and anal region).

The spores of anthrax can persist for decades in a contaminated environment.

The Federal Government said it has through the Ministry and in collaboration with the Niger state government, taken proactive measures to timely control and contain the disease.

JUDICIARY: OYO C.J SWEAR- IN 15 NEW MAGISTRATES (SEE FULL LIST)

The Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima, on Monday swore in 15 new magistrates, saying it would enable the state judiciary to perform better.

Yerina, at the swearing-in ceremony held at the State High Court premises, Ring Road, Ibadan, said that the Oyo State Magistracy had, over time, suffered a shortfall in the number of magistrates.

She said there were only 19 magistrates presiding in the various Magistrates’ Courts, spread over all the magisterial districts in the state.

According to her, there have been circumstances where a magistrate would preside over more than one magisterial district

She was, however, optimistic that the situation was set to change.

“With the appointment of more qualified legal practitioners as magistrates, I am confident to state that the judicial arm of government will be many steps closer to responding adequately to its statutory responsibilities aggressively.

“This will ensure that justice is not only done, but seen as done to all and sundry,” she said.

The chief judge charged the newly appointed magistrates to exercise their authority with fairness, impartiality, honour and utmost integrity.

“You have the power to shape lives and communities through the decisions you make; with this power comes an even greater responsibility.

“Remember that the scales of justice are balanced, and it’s your duty to ensure that they remain so,” Yerima said.

OMITUNTUN 2.0: STILL COUNTING, AN UNIMAGINABLE FACELIFT, OUTCOME OF CAMPAIGN PROMISES, MOE WRITES

OMITUNTUN 2.0: STILL COUNTING, AN UNIMAGINABLE FACELIFT, OUTCOME OF CAMPAIGN PROMISES, MOE WRITES

In 2019, Gov Seyi Makinde  promised the good people of Oyo State an Accelerated Development administration prior to the campaign trail that made his emergence free fair, credible and worthwhile.

Upon his swearing-in, he introduced a model that will be flexible to execute the four pillars towards a productive accelerated development on Security, Education, Infrastructure and AgriBusiness for expansion of economy. The model till today still valid and helping the projection plan in Making Oyo Great Again (M.O.G.A) and it's not far fetch, Data, Logic and Science.

However, sequel to the successful tenure of Omituntun 1.0, while Gov Seyi Makinde  was on campaign ground across the state towards Omituntun 2.0 sustainable development for growth and prosperity, due to the high level of performance in the area of infrastructure across all geopolitical zones in Oyo State by connecting the entire Oke Ogun in one full basking basket as first of it's kind in the history of the state. He said and I quote:

"Our top-to-bottom approach also means that under Omituntun 2.0, we will ensure that we complete all ongoing road projects and give priority attention to internal roads in urban areas."

Now, show me a Leader, Exceptional Inspirational Transformational Educationist Revolutionary Missionary Master of note like The Man Called MAKINSSON Engr. Dsc. GSSRS KJW Abiodun Oluseyi MAKINDE FNSE whose leadership trait spreading like staphylococcus in the national and sub-national Political zones hence why he was elected as the Vice chairman NGF as well recently honored a chieftaincy title as Aare Orile Igbon kingdom.

Let me burst your imagination by informing the public that, a face-lift is ongoing at some various inner roads in each of the state local Government across the state such as, The Construction of Hydraulic Structures, Earthworks and Asphaltic Tarring length 1.3km Molade focus junction-C.A.C primary School Akuro junction, an access road linking from wema bank in Iwo Road to Monatan, Iwo road Axis in Egbeda, Abayomi Rosewale Iwo road of about 700m in Ibadan North East Local Government being handled by the Executive Chairman of each LG respectively and a host of many.

Beyond rhetorics, contrary to some insinuations and innuendos from enemies of the state and charlatans that, the chairmen and Algon are inside the state government's pocket hence incapacitating them to perform their Democratic functions as Elected chairmen in their Local Government to deliver good Politics and Policies that brings Democracy to the Grassroots.

On this note, I beseech the good people of Oyo State to continue to cooperate, support and criticize constructively if need be with this administration of My Principal Effulgent Leader, Engr. Seyi Makinde and I am using this avenue to admonish all groups of opposition in the state whether dead or sick to please join hands together on sustainable development goal towards the future of the State in mind. It's time for Governance, set aside Politics as Players will come and Go, But our State Remains.

The Forum under the leadership of Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State advised the Federal Government and security agencies to rise to the situation and bring the situation under control.

They affirmed that they would continue to cooperate with the central government on issues of citizens’ welfare even though they would maintain their independence by offering criticisms when necessary.

The communique issued at the end of the meeting read by the Chairman states: “The meeting resolved to work together and unite the Forum. “The meeting noted the deteriorating security situation in the country especially the wanton destruction of lives and properties in Plateau and Zamfara States amongst other states.

“The meeting consequently advised the Federal Government and security agencies to rise to the situation and bring the situation under control.

“In the interim, the Forum would cooperate with the Federal Government on issues concerning the welfare of Nigerians and good governance while striving to maintain the independence and autonomy of the Forum through offering constructive criticisms where necessary.”
