Coronation of Obas in Ibadanland : A Chronicle of Timekeeping in Makinde's Administration - Basòrun Onítàn Ìbàdàn

The city of Ibadan embodies the values of openness, diversity, and high achievements, the city known of many firsts. Highlighting the uniqueness of the city and its impact on the lives and livelihood of the people. The coronation of all the traditional heads of eleven local government in Ibadan will be symbolic and add value to the city of Ibadan.

Coronation as the act of placement or bestowal of a crown upon a monarch's head, the significant of this in Ibadan is that outstanding growth and expansion will be enormous, the people of Ibadan bore witness to many greater things from the time of Lagelu, the Oro apata maja till now.

Historically, Ibadan became the hub of politics in the then-nascent nation and the capital of the Western Region. It was and is still acknowledged as the political headquarters of the entire South-West Nigeria. There are many reasons why Ibadan traditional institution must be looked into, for the expansion, inclusion, coordination, develop their domain, as well as protect and develop every aspect of the socio-cultural well-being of the land.

The Olubadan throne is open to all Ibadan indigenes able to climb the chieftaincy ladder, from Jagun, candidates, potential Olubadan will climb 21 steps before emerging as the Olubadan on the Otun Olubadan line, while candidates climb 22 other steps on the Balogun line making it a total of 23 steps before the candidate becomes the Olubadan.

The promotion in the line of Otun Olubadan follows this pattern: From Jagun – Ajia – Bada – Aare Onibon – Gbonnka – Aare-Egbe Omo – Oota – Lagunna – Are-Ago – Ayingun – Asaju – Ikolaba – Aare-Alasa – Agba-Akin – Ekefa – Maye – Abese – Ekaarun Olubadan – Ekerin Olubadan – Ashipa Olubadan – Osi Olubadan – Otun Olubadan, before emerging as Olubadan.

For the Balogun line, similar steps follow this pattern: Jagun – Ajia – Bada – Aare Onibon – Gbonnka – Aare-Egbe Omo – Oota – Lagunna – Are-Ago – Ayingun – Asaju – Ikolaba – Aare-Alasa – Agba-Akin – Ekefa – Maye – Abese – Ekaarun Balogun – Ekerin Balogun – Ashipa Balogun – Osi Balogun – Otun Balogun – Balogun, before eventual emergence as Olubadan.

The reform of Ibadan Chieftaincy System which many believed is long overdue was made into reality by Governor Seyi Makinde with the amendment of Chiefs Law, particularly Section 28. Civilization has brought us into sense of reality as the city is now full expanded.

Ibadan has been long governed by the 1957 Declaration Law, whereby High Chiefs under the Olubadan are subject to ridicule and lack of respect at public functions, with the new law signed by Governor Makinde, the 1957 Declaration Law has been abolished and upgraded the High Chiefs to the Status of Royal Majesty.

"Olubadan is upgraded to the Status of Imperial Majesty. The law also cut the line to 12 steps on Otun line and 13 steps on Balogun line,”

The eagle eyes of Governor Makinde made a compass of attraction for the amendment of Chief law before the heads of eleven local government could have the beaded crown, the state government was able to do this with the full backing of 9th state house of assembly under the leadership of Rt. Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin which his assembly was also made a record of law making and sound reforms in 9th assembly.

Governor Makinde has decided to put the record straight and give Ibadan a befitting status; sons and daughters of Ibadan support the amendment to Section 28 of Oyo State Chiefs Laws and the city is witnessing a new look for effective administration.

Significantly, the initial Law gave the governor right to approve beaded crown for those deserving it, but can only exercise his discretion after he must have consulted the Council of Obas and Chiefs.

“But, the amendment made by the legislatures stated that governor has the right to exercise his discretion as provided by the Law unfettered,”

The future of heritage, culture and arts of a nation rest on the shoulders of the traditional rulers and the traditional institutions around them. As guardians of culture, they are the first and last line of defence against foreign interruption and infiltration. With the promotion and coronation of eleven royal majesty in Ibadan,

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our culture, heritage and arts must be preserved, not also not forgetting that every son and daughter of the Ibadan must strive to be an outstanding

The Chiefs Law enacted on 20th June, 1957, had since formed the basis of government regulation of traditional chieftaincy in Oyo State, the section 28 (1) of the chiefs law CAP 28 laws of the state was also looked into in the year 2000, while the 9th house of assembly amended it on 24th May 2023 which read;

The initial provision of Sub-section (1) which read: ” The Governor may cause such inquiries to be held at such times and in such places and by such person or persons as it or he may consider necessary or desirable ” has now been substituted with: “The Governor may cause such inquiries to be held at such times and in such places and by such person or persons as he may consider necessary or desirable.

To this end, former Clause (3) has now become Clause (4) hence the new Sub-section (3) now reads: “Any person who pursuant to subsection (1) of this section is elevated to wear beaded crown from Baales to Minor Chiefs who being a customary tenant shall continue to pay obeisance to his prescribed or consenting authority. ”

Governor Makinde signed into law on 26th May 2023 and this put an end into agitation of many High Chiefs on the issue of beaded crowns and the volume of litigations and resentment within communities in the State.

The High Chiefs that will be coronated today are Balogun of Ibadanland, Owolabi Olakulehin; Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasheed Ladoja; Otun Balogun, Tajudeen Ajibola; Osi Olubadan, Eddy Oyewole; Osi Balogun, Lateef Adebimpe; Ashipa Olubadan, Biodun Kola-Daisi; Ashipa Balogun, Kola Adegbola; Ekerin Olubadan, Hamidu Ajibade; Ekerin Balogun, Olubunmi Isioye; Ekarun Olubadan; Bayo Akande and Ekarun Balogun, Abiodun Azeez.

Spirit of Freedom were invoked by me in Ogun state - Tinubu

The President, Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, said he invoked the spirit of freedom during his electioneering in Ogun State.

He said during the campaign season, some of his popular statements that resonated with Nigerians and his supporters were used to invoke the spirit.

The former Lagos State governor said the hardship that accompanied the Central Bank of Nigeria cash swap policy during the electioneering period forced him to invoke the spirit of freedom in the South West state.

“I invoked the spirit of freedom in Ogun,” the president said while speaking at the palace of Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, in Ijebu Ode.

He added, “It is a homecoming and I owe so much to all of you and there is so much to thank you for. Because of the way you have taken me and the way you’ve responded to me, all I can say is thank you.

“To many of you, thank you for being there for me and being there for the country. You demonstrated so much loyalty, so much commitment and voted at a very crucial time.

“Your monies were confiscated. The cash swap didn’t work. It was terrible then. I realised that and I came to Ogun State to invoke the spirit of freedom for which we are noted for.

“I invoked that spirit twice. The spirit of Baba (referring to Awujale). The spirit of Baba – Emi l’okan (it’s my turn), that’s Baba. The spirit for being blunt and that is him.

“And the second spirit is that of money (Naira scarcity), ‘ama dibo ama wole’ (we will vote and we will win) even if there is no money. And that, ever since, has been the spirit that is driving me to serve.”

Tinubu had on June 3 set the social media on fire when he vented his frustration during a presidential campaign in Abeokuta, saying it was through his efforts that the ex-President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), made it to Aso Rock after failing thrice.

It was during the event that he blurted out his now famous quote, “emilokan” (It’s my turn).

“It is my time. I’m educated. I’m experienced. I have been serving people for a long time. Bring me the presidency, it is my turn,’’ Tinubu had insisted.

He also pointed at Abiodun whom he described as ‘Eleyi’ absentmindedly as one of the products of his political hard work.

“Look at this one (Eleyi) seated behind me, Dapo, he wouldn’t have become governor without my support,” Tinubu had stated.

Tinubu made the statement while addressing the APC delegates in Ogun State.

His outburst evoked mixed feelings from Nigerians, with many loyalists of the party including the National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, saying the remarks were meant to slight the president and Ogun State governor.

Also, in reaction to the new naira scarcity and fuel shortage which provoked riots across the country, Tinubu accused unnamed powerful persons of masterminding the crisis to shoot down his aspirations. His ally, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, affirmed that some Presidency officials, including the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, were working against Tinubu.

EID: Makinde Has Done What A Son Should Do For His Father; Gave Me Big Cow, Bags Of Rice – Ladoja

Former Governor of Oyo, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, on Wednesday, stated that he still maintain a cordial relationship with the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde.

While speaking on the present relationship in the aftermath of how the 2023 election panned out, Ladoja boasted that he had a father-son relationship with Makinde.

“I have father to son relationship with Seyi Makinde. It is cordial. He gave me a big cow and several bags of rice for this Salah celebration. That is what a son should do to the father,” he said.

The Nigerian Tribune Newspaper reports that Ladoja while addressing journalists at his Ibadan home after observing Eid prayers said he was furious at the governor’s lack of support for the senatorial and House of Representatives candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last elections such that the party lost the three senatorial seats and nine Reps seats.

Ladoja said his stance was that even if the governor was not supporting the presidential candidate of the PDP in the last election, he should not act such that the chances of his other candidates of the party in the National Assembly elections in the State would be jeopardized.

Asked if there was a clash of interests prior to the election, he said: “What happened was that I got furious because I felt that the governor should have supported his candidates for the Senatorial and House of Representatives elections, even if he did not want to support the presidential candidate. But, he did not support the Senators; he lost the three senatorial seats; he lost nine House of Representatives seats.

“I was disgusted. That was the only thing. I then said that election will have effect on his own election. If that is what people feel is not right, that is their own opinion. My own opinion is that governor of the state should support candidates for senatorial, house of representatives. What is the clash of interests? I was not contesting; my son was not contesting; my wife was not contesting.”

Eld: Oyo PDP, Felicitates Muslims " Eid-el Kabir Is About Sacrificial Giving, Love, Faith"

People Democratic Party Oyo state chapter has Felicitates Muslims Ummah across the state this felicitations was disseminated out through the Press Release by Engr. Akeem Olatunji, Publicity Secretary of the party he stressed that Eld-  Kabir Is About Sacrificial Giving, Love, Faith.

Oyo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) felicitates Muslim faithful across the state on the occasion of 2023 Eid-el Kabir.

While urging Muslims to reflect on the significance of the annual Islamic celebration, the ruling party in the state stressed the importance of sacrifice, love, and faith in human relation and nation building.

The Oyo state chairman of PDP, Honourable Dayo Ogungbenro made this disclosure in a press statement made available to journalists today by the party's Publicity Secretary, Akeem Olatunji.

The party equally felicitates the Deputy Governor, Barrister Adebayo Abdulroheem  who is currently observing holy pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and all Muslim leaders in Oyo state

The ruling PDP noted that even the relationship between God and man is clearly defined adding that both have expectations towards each other in order to continue to sustain the relationship while urging Muslims to continue to trust the Seyi Makinde  led PDP government enough to continue to support it.

"Eid-el-Kabir is one of the two important festivals in Islam. It is an occasion where Muslims celebrate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Ismail, in total submission to will and command of Allah.

"However, his faith was only being tested by God and when it was discovered that he was willing to exhibit such level of obedience, God gave Prophet Ibrahim a ram to use as sacrifice instead of his son.

"So, in essence, the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir avails Muslims the opportunity to imitate the sacrificial giving as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim.

"We therefore, urge our brothers and sisters in Islam to endeavor to extend the hand of love to one another inclusive or non Muslims alike in showing kindness and compassion through giving.

"Do not hoard meat or food, ensure you give to others in faith and the Almighty Allah that has provided for you to celebrate will provide even more by simply showing obedience to the teachings of Islam." The party said.

The party also called for more prayers for the success of Omititun 2.0 tagged Sustainable Development Agenda under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, assuring that the people of the state are in for another term of remarkable sector by sector achievements.
