Court Remands Nine Auxiliary’s Allies Over Alleged Robbery, Attempted Murder

The state Magistrate court, Iyaganku on Friday has remanded nine associates of an embattled former chairman of the park management system, Oyo State Mukaila Lamidi popular known as Auxiliary for alleged conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearms.

The suspects are, Olaniyi Abiodun, Kamoru Yusuf, Odunayo Ismaika, Kolawole Joshua, and Oladosun Kunle.

Others are, Fatai Abidemi, Oluwoke Akanbi, Sarafadeen Adewale, and Tirimisiyu Odunayo

They were arraigned on a 16-count charge at Ibadan Magistrate Court, Iyaganku on Friday but pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The charge sheets read in part, “That you, ( suspects) and others now at large on 29th May 2023 at about 2:00 pm at Governor Seyi Makinde”s residence, Ikolaba area, Ibadan in the Magistrate Court District did conspire together to commit felony to wit armed robbery and, thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under section 6 (B) of the robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R 11 Vol 14 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.”

The defense counsel, Barr J. D. Olaniyan argued that the Court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case noting the charges leveled against his clients.

He, thereby, prayed the Court to remand the suspects at Agodi Correctional Centre, pending the time that the case would be assigned to a competent court of law for hearing.

He argues that their counsel’s families and relations would have access to them at Agodi Correctional Centre, Ibadan.

He argued further that the “Court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the case with the nature of the charges which ranges from attempted murder to armed robbery.

“I, therefore, pray the Court to remand them at Agodi Correctional Centre for accessibility and convenience.

“This will make it easier to their counsels to prepare their defense as well bail application.”

In his ruling, Magistrate, S.H. Adebisi said the Court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case noting the charges ranges from conspiracy, and armed robbery to attempted murder which is a capital offense.

He, therefore, ordered them to be remanded in prison and subsequently adjourned the case till 26th July 2023.

Families and relations who thronged the Court broke down in tears as they watched helplessly as suspects were been led to the NCS waiting van.

LADOJA MAY NOT BE PART OF ELEVATION OF IBADAN OBAS;CONSIDERING GOING TO COURT

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja may not be part of the 11 Ibadan High Chiefs recently elevated to become beaded crown Obas by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Recall that the Oyo State Governor had signed into law the State Chieftaincy system bill as amended by the Oyo State Legislature which gives the governor the sole power to decide who becomes what in Oyo traditional council.

A source very close to the former governor, Sen Rasidii Ladoja has hinted that the Otun Olubadan will distance himself from the coronation of the High Chiefs as beaded crown Obas.

‘Baba is presently in Cotonou. He has not made his position known on this new development but I can tell you he will not be part of this comedy.

The last time I spoke with him about it. What he said was that he did not set out to become a lesser Oba when he began the journey. His dream is to become the Olubadan and nothing less”.

‘I think Baba will be available in Ibadan before sallah. He will surely make his position known. You know he doesn’t have the power to stop others from being crowned. But as for him,he will not be part of the coronation of High Chiefs. Baba has nothing against the elevation of those Baales to beaded crown Obas once due process is followed ‘,the source submitted

The source went further to state that the former Governor may likely approach the court to challenge the decision of the government on this development.

Nigeria’s total public debt may hit N81.64tn

Nigeria’s total public debt may hit N81.64tn this year,

The figure was arrived at based on the 2022 Debt Sustainability Analysis Report by Debt Management Office.

According to the debt office, the increase in total public debt-to-GDP to 37.1 per cent in 2023 from 23.4 per cent as of September 2022 was due to the inclusion of an estimated N8.8tn 2023 debt, the government’s Ways and Means debt of over N23tn, and an estimated Promissory Notes issuance of N2.87tn in the debt stock.

As of December 2022, Nigeria’s total public debt was N46.25tn, which means they might be an increase of 76.52 per cent this year.

In the report, the DMO warned that the Federal Government’s projected revenue of N10tn for 2023 cannot support fresh borrowings.

According to the office, the projected government’s debt service-to-revenue ratio of 73.5 per cent for 2023 is high and a threat to debt sustainability. It noted that the government’s current revenue profile cannot support higher levels of borrowing.

In a report titled, ‘Report of the Annual National Market Access Country (MAC) Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA),’ the debt office said, “The projected FGN Debt Service-to-Revenue ratio at 73.5 per cent for 2023 is high and a threat to debt sustainability.

Tinubu Fails To Join Other African Leaders On The Paris Summit Economic Panel On Stage Read more at: https://ejesgist.ng/tinubu-fails-to-join-other-african-leaders-on-the-paris-summit-economic-panel-on-stage/

President Bola Tinubu was unable to participate in a live economic session during the ongoing summit of world leaders in Paris. Instead, he asked the Nigerian ambassador to represent him, although the reasons for his absence on stage were not immediately clear. Prior to the summit, his office had announced his attendance and participation in a debate concerning Africa’s economic prospects

The global financing pact summit, taking place at Palais Brongniart in Paris over two days, aims to find effective solutions to reduce poverty and address the adverse impacts of climate change on the global financial system

Scheduled to join other participants on stage at 6:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, Tinubu’s aides had confirmed his preparedness for the event, which marked his first since assuming the presidency on May 29. The Nigerian ambassador, Adamu Ahmed, represented him alongside other notable figures, including David Craig, co-chair of the task force on nature-related financial disclosures (TNFD); Mark Carney of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ); Mary Schapiro of global public policy at Bloomberg; Sabine Mauderer of the Network for Greening the Financial System; and United Nations special envoy Catherine Mckenna.

In a speech prepared hastily, Ambassador Ahmed expressed the belief that addressing social issues should be elevated alongside environmental concerns. He commended President Macron for emphasizing the issue of poverty at the summit, emphasizing that the focus should encompass climate, people, and diversity

Ambassador Ahmed highlighted the economic difficulties faced by African countries in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that public resources alone would no longer suffice to tackle the challenges. He emphasized the need to attract private capital and compete with other countries worldwide. Ahmed also welcomed President Macron’s initiative to develop a Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) as a repository that would greatly benefit African nations.

He further conveyed the message that African countries are ready to actively engage with the international community and are transitioning from mere commitments to concrete plans. Ahmed cited Nigeria’s enactment of the Climate Change Act in 2021, establishing the Climate Change Council with President Tinubu at the helm, along with the establishment of a climate change fund and a National Action Plan. Nigeria has set a net-zero target of 2060, recognizing the substantial challenges it faces, and has sought regional partnerships with other African countries.

This trip marked President Tinubu’s first international visit since assuming the Nigerian presidency on May 29. The reasons for his non-participation in this crucial aspect of the summit, despite concerns about the impact of removing subsidies on petroleum products, which were previously used to alleviate economic hardships, remain unclear. Although Tinubu has reportedly sought medical treatment in Paris in the past, his aides denied any plans for a medical visit during this trip

Several African leaders, including South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, participated on stage during the summit on Thursday evening

Palliative: FG Orders Distribution of Free Solar Systems

The Federal Government has flagged off the distribution of free solar home systems across the country as a way to cushion the adverse effect of fuel subsidy removal.

The Managing Director of Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo while on an inspection visit to Makoko, Lagos over the weekend, said FG had ordered the agency to scale up on the deployment of more free solar systems to homes, schools and hospitals across the country.

This, according to him, was under the Ministry of Power’s Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy programme.

“We are here on a short inspection visit. REA under the supervision of the Ministry of Power came here as part of our programmes under one of our projects, the Poverty Reduction and Growth and Strategy Programme as approved by the Federal Government.

“We are mindful of the removal of fuel subsidies and have assessed that the solar systems would be more useful in areas like this, where they do not have adequate power supply. What we have done is to test how we can distribute decentralised solar systems, specifically, 150 watts to very critical places in this neighbourhood- to small schools, homes and hospitals where we can provide them with lighting points, power for their fans and televisions,” he said.

According to him, a total of 30 such solar systems have been deployed so far in the Makoko community.

“We are happy with the feedback so far because the beneficiaries have been enjoying the benefits of the systems. This programme would be continued because more funds would be approved for the deployment of more systems,” he said.

Salihijo added that the agency had also visited Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, and Osogbo in Osun State, where solar systems had been deployed to markets and agricultural hubs.

“Although we had to charge a fee for the one deployed to markets and agricultural plantations in Ijebu and Osogbo, those deployed to homes, hospitals and schools are absolutely free of charge,” he noted.

While expressing gratitude to the Federal Government, the traditional leader of Makoko Community, Migbewe 2, Chief Jeje Albert said the community was happy with the laudable project.

For widespread benefit, he then urged the government to deploy more of such solar systems to the community.

PMS Leadership in Oyo State: Evidence of Inclusive and Sustainable Growth

A clear vision backed by definite plans gives a tremendous feeling of confidence. When Governor Seyi Makinde administration came up with the idea of Park Management System (PMS), some clowns disguised as the opposition called it audio initiative but for the first time in the history of Nigeria the PMS is proving to be one of the smartest ways for IGR.

Governor Seyi Makinde's administration is bringing the future of the state into the present, the way and manner Oyo governor made organisation of thoughts into ideas and plans are highly significant in Nigeria. It is evident that good transformation of those ideas into reality is showing in Oyo State.

PMS which is the acronym for the Oyo State Park Management System was initiated by Governor Makinde in Nigeria, towards the end of his first tenure of office, Governor Makinde assured Oyo State residents that his administration is set to improve transportation to meet up with the international standard.

The reality about transportation is that it is future-oriented. If we are planning for what we have, we are behind the curve and this is one of the reasons why Governor Seyi Makinde wants the future of the transport sector in the state to have a new touch.

When the Park Management System (PMS) was launched in Oyo State early in 2020, not many were willing to believe in the idea. Today, the PMS idea has become a toast of many states. Lagos, Ekiti, and Ondo states have fully launched their versions of PMS, a clear vindication of Makinde as the man who saw tomorrow, as far as the management of the parks is concerned.

With the new leadership of PMS in Oyo State, headed by a gentle giant, Alhaji Tomiwa Omolewa fondly called Tommy. It is the responsibility of his leadership to put a monitoring system in place, analyze the data that is being generated during the implementation and make any necessary changes to make the implementation more efficient. Omolewa has set benchmarks as well as key performance indicators that will enable him to operate effectively in the office.

The new park management committee in Oyo State has Baba Bola as secretary, and also includes Alhaji Tajudeen Jimoh, Deputy Chairman; Kamardeen Idowu, Oyo RTEAN Chairman as Treasurer; Tirimisiyu Olowoposi, Financial Secretary; Abass Amolese, Organising Secretary; and Alhaji Hamidu Mustapha Were, Auditor, with Alhaji Abideen Ejiogbe, First Vice Chairman; Ganiyu Mojeed, First Trustee; Alhaji Musa Alubankudi, Second Trustee, Alhaji Rahman Akinsola Tokyo, Second Auditor; and Alhaji Wasiu Emiola, Public Relations Officer.

These are men of experience in their chosen field, we now have a well-regulated system with chairmen, and unit heads who acted and controlled the activities of what goes on at the parks, and there is less violence in our parks with rules and regulations.

Any businessman will tell you that transportation is fundamental to success.

Kudos should be given to the Governor of Oyo State for having a good vision towards this sector, bearing in mind that modern terminals around the city have already made the state a beautiful outlook, provided jobs, solve the problem of insecurity, and boost the IGR of the state.

Alhaji Tomiwa Omolewa-led committee has had a significant impact on the strategic management process of our parks, his experience will help him to determine the vision and mission of the park management system, and he will also use his wisdom to facilitate the committee members to execute effective strategies to achieve that vision.

While their activities are being monitored by the state government, the committee is also set to be a collaborator, risk manager, change driver, and decision maker, the government will be guide, change enabler, and evaluator.

It is evident that the new leadership of PMS under Alhaji Tomiwa Omolewa is a body of responsible and law-abiding individuals committed to maintaining peace and order, residents of the state have also shown gratitude to Governor Makinde for fulfilling his promise on the leadership of PMS in Oyo State.

With the emergence of the new committee for the park management system, the IGR of the state will be improved, also there is full integration and interest protection among members of the transport union which has enhanced the customer/commuters journey with the provision of the unified procedure.

This new committee focuses on sound inspiration, creating sustainable and inclusive growth, featuring collaborative networks of self-managing teams that operate in rapid cycles and focus on creating value for the stakeholders.

Moving from an era of individual leaders to an era of networked leadership teams that will steer the PMS as the Governor suggested that a high-performing leadership team will always outperform the capabilities of individuals. This new committee under the leadership of Alhaji Tomiwa Omolewa has a clear purpose and focus, to benefit all stakeholders by enabling people to work and learn together to build and operate a continually evolving system that will create value for the good people of Oyo State.

FG Approves Re-opening Of Seme Border For Vehicle Importation

Director of Road Transport in the Ministry of Transportation, Ibrahim Musa, said they decided to reopen the border following complaints by freight forwarders operating in the area.

The Tinubu-led federal government has approved the re-opening of the Seme border for vehicle importation.

Director of Road Transport in the Ministry of Transportation, Ibrahim Musa who made the announcement on Wednesday, June 21, during his speech at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) meeting organised between officials of Nigeria and Benin, said they decided to reopen the border following complaints by freight forwarders operating in the area.

Musa said;

“I was here with the former Minister of State for Transportation when the Freight Forwarders pleaded that the border should be reactivated for the free movement of goods and services.

“The former minister made us prepare a memo to that effect. It was considered and sent to the government.”

The Customs Area Controller of Seme Border Command, Dera Nnadi also said the service has noticed a reduction in its revenue since the importation of vehicles was banned from the land borders.

Nnadi said;

“The former Minister of Transportation, responding to some of our requests and from the stakeholders, promised to take them to the Federal Executive Council, FEC, one of them is how to fully open this border.

“The Ministry has informed us that the memo has been written to FEC and it was adopted and that it would be given to the new government, he assured us that all the requests were adopted.”

Labour fumes as RMFAC hikes politicians’ salaries

Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission has recommended an upward review  in the basic salaries of political and judicial office holders.

The Chairman of the commission,  Alhaji Muhammadu Shehu, who was represented by the RMAFC commissioner from  Kebbi State, Mrs Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, disclosed this on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi, during the presentation of the reviewed remuneration package of political and judicial office holders to the state Governor, Dr Nasir Idris.

Commenting on the proposed salary increase, the organised labour described it as provocative because of the fuel subsidy removal pain Nigerians were going through.

The News Agency of  Nigeria on Wednesday reported that the reviewed salary required legislation by the national and state assemblies before its implementation.

According to NAN, the commission stated that the last review was done in 2007, which led to the 2008 Act on the remuneration of political office holders.

It stated,  “The commission, having considered that the consumer price index of some selected ba upskets of commodities have collectively grown by an average of 371% from 2008 to 2022, the current annual basic salary of all categories of political, public and judicial office holders in the country is adjusted upward by 114 per cent. ”

The agency disclosed that it recommended that existing allowances of political office holders be maintained, while three new allowances were introduced for judicial office holders.

These include allowances for a professional development assistant, a long service allowance, and a restricted lifestyle allowance.

Legislative backing

The commission explained that the reviewed remuneration packages required “legislation by the National Assembly’’  for beneficiaries at the federal level and the Federal Capital Territory, while the review for those in states and local governments would need legislative backing by state assemblies.

It admitted that the review would lead to an increase in personnel cost of government at all levels, adding that the remuneration packages were inputs from workshops it held on February 1.

The commission further explained that the review was in line with the provision of Paragraph 32(d) of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Government (as amended).

It said: “It empowers the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission to determine the remuneration appropriate for political office holders, including the President, Vice President, governors, deputy governors, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, legislators and the holders of the offices mentioned in Sections 84 and 124 of the Constitution of the Federal Government.”

It said the last review of the remuneration was carried out in 2007, which culminated in the “Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) (Amendment) Act, 2008.

”Sixteen years after the last review, it is imperative that the Remuneration Packages for the categories of the office holders mentioned in relevant Sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) should be reviewed.

”Pursuant to the above, Your Excellency may please recall that on Wednesday, 1st February 2023, the Commission held a one-day zonal public hearing on the review of the remuneration package simultaneously in all the six (6) geo-political zones of the country.

” The exercise aimed at harvesting  inputs or ideas from a broad spectrum of stakeholders.”

But commenting on the NAN report,  the RMAFC Public Relations Officer, Christian Nwachukwu, in an interview with one of correspondent, said the rate of the salary increase had not been fixed.

‘No fixed rate yet’

He stated, “There is no authentic information on that (the rate) because it has to be forwarded, although we have done some things on it. There is no percentage we can say now. I am not aware of that.”

He said this in a response to media reports about the commission approving the increment of salaries of political office-holders, judicial and public office holders by 114 per cent

Efforts to get a comment from the RMAFC Chairman failed as he simply informed our correspondent that he was not in the country at the time we contacted him.

Commenting on the salary review, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Wednesday noted it would provoke Nigerians.

Speaking to our correspondent on the matter, a Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, said, “The increment is such that will provoke Nigerians seeing as Nigerians are already groaning under the effect of the subsidy removal among others. The TUC has always called for a reduction in the cost of governance. However, if they still go ahead with it, we are going to use that opportunity to table more allowances for the Nigerian people.”

On its part, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics described the proposed 114 per cent pay rise for elected politicians as provocative and insensitive.

The National President of the union, Dr Anderson Ezeibe,  in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja,  said, “ The report is provocative and insensitive. It is difficult to see the rationale behind such a move by the government in a country where the working class has been groaning under severe economic pains.

“While the staff unions in the tertiary education sector have been negotiating a wage increase with the government since 2017 and the government showing a lack of commitment to the process, the same government is busy awarding themselves such pay rise.

“The citizens are still suffering from the impact of the removal of subsidy on PMS, increase in electricity tariff and the attendant implications on their wellbeing only to see such “reward” which can only encourage opulence and oppression by the political class.

“It is an affront to Labour as the Labour movement is still trying to come to terms with the reality of the economic situation in the country and negotiating some palliatives from the same government. It is disappointing.”

Meanwhile, the organized Labour will again meet with the representative of the Federal Government on Monday, The PUNCH has learnt.

The meeting, according to information gathered by our correspondent, is a follow-up meeting to the one held on Monday.

A  TUC Vice-President , Etim disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.

The June 19 meeting was the fourth in a series of negotiations between the Federal Government and the organised labour since the removal of the fuel subsidy by  President Bola Tinubu on May 29.

Speaking with our correspondent in Abuja, the labour leader said, “We have another meeting on Monday and it is a continuation of the former meeting. During our last meeting, the special adviser to the president on energy unveiled a roadmap but the terms of reference were not unveiled. So labour asked that it be shared so that we can also put in our inputs. We will also send a list of our members who will form part of the subcommittees of the main steering committee.”

FLASH: DSS Storms Suspended EFCC Chairman, Bawa’s Office, House, To Investigate Associates

The home and office of Abdulrasheed Bawa, the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have been searched by agents of the Department of State Services (DSS).

This follows allegations of mismanagement, misappropriation, and diversion of proceeds from the sale of forfeited assets.

The suspended EFCC Chairman is currently in the custody of the DSS in Abuja, under investigation for alleged financial impropriety during his tenure as EFCC chairman.

Bawa was suspended indefinitely as EFCC chairman by President Bola Tinubu on June 14, and shortly afterwards, the DSS took him into custody.

According to reliable sources that spoke with Punch, DSS agents searched Bawa’s home in Gwarinpa, Abuja, in the presence of his wife and children.

An inside source revealed that DSS agents also searched Bawa’s office on the same day. They provided a search warrant for both locations.

The source stated, “DSS operatives stormed the EFCC Headquarters in Jabi on Saturday to search the office of the suspended chairman. But they presented a search warrant. Another set of DSS operatives also searched Bawa’s home in Gwarinpa, and they met his wife and children in the house during the search.

“Bawa’s close associates at the office were also invited for questioning this week, and they’re being probed on allegations of mismanagement, misappropriation, and diversion of proceeds forfeited assets sold under Bawa’s watch.”

However, an anonymous government source indicated that the DSS has not yet pressed charges against Bawa, as their investigation is ongoing.

“The DSS is yet to charge him to court because they’re still carrying out their investigation,” the source said.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the DSS has obtained an ex parte order to extend Bawa’s detention in their facility during their continued investigation.

A government source suggested that this move by the DSS is to deter Bawa from challenging his detention in court.

Makinde elevates Ladoja, 10 other Ibadan high chiefs to Oba

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the promotion of 11 Ibadan High Chiefs to beaded crown Obas.

The PUNCH had reported that the governor recently signed the Chieftaincy Amendment Bill into law seeking to grant him autonomy to present beaded crowns and coronets to chiefs in the state, following its passage by the state House of Assembly.

The High Chiefs are Balogun of Ibadanland, Owolabi Olakulehin; Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasheed Ladoja; Otun Balogun, Tajudeen Ajibola; Osi Olubadan, Eddy Oyewole; Osi Balogun, Lateef Adebimpe; Ashipa Olubadan, Biodun Kola-Daisi; Ashipa Balogun, Kola Adegbola; Ekerin Olubadan, Hamidu Ajibade; Ekerin Balogun, Olubunmi Isioye; Ekarun Olubadan; Bayo Akande and Ekarun Balogun, Abiodun Azeez.

An informed government source, who confided in our correspondent, on Wednesday, said the governor had given his consent to the promotion, and the high chiefs will be officially installed as traditional rulers, on Friday, July 7, 2023

It was further gathered that the governor’s approval was sequel to the recommendation of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who is the prescribed and consenting authority.

The source said, “This elevation would have come earlier before now. Even before the administration of the late former governor, Abiola Ajimobi. Ajimobi had a good intention on this elevation but the approach was wrong. Why would you just wake up one day and do something of such nature in just three days or thereabouts.

“You will be shocked when you see some Obas from other places who are not even up to High Chief in Ibadanland in a public place with a large entourage. But sometimes, our High Chiefs are regarded as mere chiefs. So, it’s a good decision and the governor has given his consent on that. They will be officially crowned on Friday, July 7, 2023 as stipulated in a letter sent to the governor by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Balog
