Controversy Hits National Youth Games as Athletes Screened Out

Controversy Hits National Youth Games as Athletes Screened Out
A controversy has erupted at the 8th National Youth Games after five athletes of Team Oyo - two female and three male - were disqualified by the Screening Committee of the Athletics Event.

According to Athletics Coach Raji Ismail, the coaches were barred from entering the screening center, only to discover that athletes were not assessed using their National Identity Number (NIN) slips, as expected, but rather through facial recognition.

"We were asked to bring the NIN, which we did, but they didn't use it. Instead, they used facial screening," Ismail said in a chat with BCOS reporter Tobi Ajewole. "All the athletes screened out are under 15 years old."

The Athletics Team has lodged an appeal, with a response expected before the official opening ceremony. Meanwhile, a male football player and a male cyclist have also been screened out, with their coaches confirming that they will appeal the decision.

The incident has raised questions about the screening process and its fairness, with many calling for transparency and a review of the disqualification decisions.
