Olubadan Stool: Ibadan Elevated Obas May Regret Actions— High Chiefs, Not Kings Can Nominate New Olubadan - Barr. Michael Lana

Olubadan Stool: Ibadan Elevated Obas May Regret Actions— High Chiefs, Not Kings Can Nominate New Olubadan - Barr. Michael Lana

A former attorney-general and commissioner for justice in Oyo State, Michael Lana, has intervened in the twist in the selection of a new Olubadan.

OYOINSIGHT.COM had reported how the elevated Ibadan Obas failed to honour a meeting called by Otun Olubadan, Rashidi Ladoja, saying that they are bigger than him because the former governor is a high chief.

It would be recalled that Ladoja had been opposed to the chieftaincy review by the government which elevated the high chiefs to Obaship status. He is currently in court challenging the process.

OYOINSIGHT.COM had also reported a subtle move to prevent Ladoja from ascending the throne when it is his turn.

But Lana, who was in court as Ladoja’s lawyer before the late Olubadan, Oba Mohood Balogun was allowed to be enthroned, said that action of the elevated Obas may boomerang should Chief Ladoja decide to fight back.

In an exclusive interview with OYOINSIGHT.COM, the Ibadan-born lawyer who was the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the 2023 election, said that “under the Olubadan declaration, only high chiefs and not Obas can nominate an Olubadan. If they toe this line of argument that a non-Oba could not chair the meeting of the ones, then their meeting is null and void and any nomination made by them as obas is invalid.

“In law, we view the capacity in which a thing is to be done. A person usually has multiple capacities with each capacity controlled by different laws. In this case, the High Chiefs qua high chiefs have a role different from the high chiefs qua Obas. The elevated Obas are in dual capacity; one as Oba and the other as High Chief. As Obas, they cannot nominate a person for the stool of Olubadan; they can only do so as High Chiefs. In the latter capacity, their most senior chief is Chief Ladoja who is also the only person that can validly call a meeting for the purpose of nominating the candidate for the Olubadan stool. I think the elevated Obas should note this difference in their capacities.

“This is part of the problem I knew would happen ab initio. Let me break it down: In the process of nomination of a candidate to fill a chieftaincy the first document you look at is the Chieftaincy Declaration pertaining to that Chieftaincy.

“In elevating the chiefs to Obas, their Chieftaincy Declarations were not amended. Under the defunct White Paper of Ajimobi, it was stated that the Obas would be chiefs under the Olubadan.

“Under the Declaration, the following are the Kingmakers: a) Otun Olubadan, b) Osi Olubadan, c) Ashipa Olubadan, d) Ekerin Olubadan, e) Iyalode f) The Balogun, g) Otun Balogun h) Osi Balogun, I)Ashipa Balogun, j) Ekerin Balogun and Seriki(which is no more)

“To nominate a candidate, the most senior Chief in the line that is NOT producing the candidate shall summon a meeting where the chiefs in the line that will produce the candidate shall do the nomination.

“Note that it doesn’t talk of an Oba in the lines but a chief. Secondly Ladoja is the most senior in the line that is NOT producing the candidate and the only person that MUST summon the meeting,” he added.

Ibadanland: Why we have not yet nominated Olakulehin as new Olubadan —Council of Obas

Council of Obas in Ibadanland has said that Olubadan designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin cannot be nominated in absentia for Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval as the new monarch for Ibadanland.

The Ekerein Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade stated this while speaking to the Nigerian Tribune.

Oba Olakulehin has yet to make a public appearance since the transition of the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun precisely 12 days ago.

The council, as reliably gathered, ought to meet after the eighth Fidau which was held last Friday in accordance with the tradition.

Oba Ajibade hinted that the council met on Monday at the Oja’ba palace, with crowned kings of Ibadanland in attendance except Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

According to him, the crowned kings of Ibadanland were present at the meeting except Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Ajibade stated: “Nine of us, namely Oba Eddy Oyewole (Osi Olubadan), Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, (Otun Balogun), Oba Lateef Gbadamosi Adebimpe, (Osi Balogun), Oba Biodun Koka-,Daisi, (Asipa Olubadan), Oba Kola Adegbola, (Asipa Balogun), Oba Hamidu Ajibade Salaudeen (Ekerin Olubadan), Oba John Isioye Dada,(Ekerin Balogun), Oba Muritala Akande, (Ekaarun Olubadan) and Oba Abiodun Azeez Agagagugu, (Ekaarun Balogun) were in attendance.

All of us are Royal Majesties. We are the Obas that the late Oba Lekan Balogun gave crowns to by the power conferred on him by our governor, Seyi Makinde.

“We are the Oba Advisory Council. We are not Chiefs. The only Oba who is not present at the meeting is Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, and we cannot nominate him in his absence.

“We are waiting for the next Olubadan that will come from the Balogun line and that is Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

“There was not much in our meeting yesterday except that we Obas in Council that have been crowned by the Oyo State government will know the next step to take.

“We have visited the house of the Olubadan designate shortly after the demise of the late Olubadan.

“We met his son, the former Commissioner, Sunbo Owolabi, who told us that Baba was not around. We told him that anytime that he is around they should let us know in order for us to pay homage to him as the new Olubadan.

“Everybody knows what is going on in Ibadan. We know the next king. That is Baba Owolabi. He is the one that will become His Imperial Majesty.

“I am not aware of any scheduled meeting. We the Obas met yesterday, (Monday) and it was concluded that we will continue to wait till we see the new Oba.

When contacted on the telephone, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland and former governor of Oyo state, Senator Rasidi Ladoja said that he was not aware of any meeting, stressing that “I was not contacted for any meeting scheduled for Monday.”

CIRCULAR ROAD CORRIDOR WILL ACCOMMODATE INDUSTRIAL PARKS, OTHER AMENITIES - Oyo Commissioner for Works

CIRCULAR ROAD CORRIDOR WILL ACCOMMODATE INDUSTRIAL PARKS, OTHER AMENITIES - Oyo Commissioner for Works

Commissioner for Public works and Transport, Professor Daud Sangodoyin in an interview with Soji Ajibola opens up on the plans of Governor Seyi Makinde for 110km Circular road.

In life, everybody aspires for development.

We were born here 63 years ago and the level of development as at 2019 in ibadanland was too slow compared to cities like Cairo, Johannesburg and others. Cairo, in the 60s used to be at par with Ibadan in terms of infrastructural development, same thing with Johannesburg in South Africa. Governor Seyi Makinde led administration is looking for a situation when Ibadan will be at par with developed cities across the globe in terms of development. The Circular road will contribute immensely to the development of Ibadanland and possibly take us to the level that even foreign countries, United Kingdom, Canada will be envious of Ibadanland when completed.

What will the setback on the circular road be used for?

It will be converted to Industrial Parks while other amenities of accrued benefits would be sited there. If you have been to Johannesburg and you travel to Pretoria which is 56km road, I have video of that road, there is a particular building on that road. The building is 2km from the road. Other buildings are Industrial Parks up to Pretoria. It is lovely. That is what Seyi Makinde wants to replicate on Circular road. We are also starting the 36km from Badeku to Alarere, that is Moniya end. In the next six months, we will start clearing… We want to make sure that we have access and connection with the Train station. By the time we open the second leg of the South East and North east segment, you will find out that Ibadan would have become one of the developed cities in the world.

How many bridges do we have on Circular road?

We have six bridges and two interchanges already completed. From the Technical University to Jagun area, that is the first part, we have three underpasses and one overpass and some culvets. The culvets are the one helping us to channel the rivers. The other ends have five underpasses and one overpass, that is Badeku to Jagun that is the only area that people are shouting that we have been demolishing houses. The one from Jagun to Tech U has only one building on our pavement now. The owner of the affected building has actually left because he knew actually that he was not supposed to be there. The one under contention is the one from Badeku to Jagun that has many illegal buildings on the pavement. Works are progressing. We have paid off the contractors. The inflation is going up. If they are unable to access the road, the contractors will leave. That is why the ministry of Lands is assisting us to bulldoze illegal buildings on the pavement of 150 metres to the right and left.

What is the level of works at Olodo Bridge and Olorunsogo-Akanran expressway?

Olodo bridge, by the special grace of God will be opened to the traffic by the 30th of April 2024. As I speak now, we have completed the casting of the beam. I was there on an inspection last Sunday. We are doing what we call approaches. By the end of March, all the slabs and what we have casted would have been fixed. After this, we will do approaches in terms of the asphalt and by mid-April, we will do a test run on that bridge. By God’s grace, 30th of April, the road will be opened to human and vehicular movements. On Olorunsogo-Akanran expressway, we have finished laying of asphalt. There are two levels of asphalt laying; the first level is called binder course, after binder course, you will leave it for natural compartment. Let me go back to Olodo bridge again, Olodo bridge construction is not an artwork that you can say in two, three days, I will finish this artwork and give it out. There are so many factors that will look at weather condition is number one while the second one is soil test. The project is affected by the weather condition even the soil itself, when you do soil test, you must be sure that the soil can actually take up the piling. There may be one or two adjustments. What delayed that one was the issue of weather, issue of some equipment. Like I mentioned in one of the interviews granted that we came with four equipments for us to lift the slab but two of them were faulty when we started the process. We have to look for another one. These are the machines that must operate at the same time because one will lift it from where we did the slab while another will drop it, unto the piling, then another one will check that it is properly done. This is not something that we can say in two or three hours the works will be carried out. But thank God, we have broken the bar of that because as I am speaking we have casted the entire slabs. We are doing the approaches. For the Amuloko road. I was there on Thursday. What happened was that over the last two, three weeks, we have been doing the binders course. The binders couse means ceiling the soil base and the stone base. What we did was the wearing course. Wearing course means final course asphalt layer that we are going to do. The issue about the drainage on the other part is what we are focusing on. If you get there now, you will see that our men are working on the drainage. If we have not finished the drainage, we cannot go to the hardwork on the pavement because drainage must be completed before we do the soil base, the stone base, the binder course and the real course.

What is the stage of work at Agara and Odo-ona Elewe bridges?

They have promised us that the work will be completed by April ending. As I speak, work is tremendously going on on that bridge.

Governor Makinde made this announcement during the commissioning of the Idi Ape Civic Centre and Agodi Gate Junction Improvement Projects on Friday.

His commitment to easing the plight of these traders has been met with widespread appreciation, with Oyo Iyaloja general, Princess Folashade Abeo emphasizing that such gestures underscore the governor’s compassionate nature.

Princess Abeo remarked, “This has actually proven engineer Seyi Makinde is a listening Governor and a personality that shows empathy in whatever he does.”

She expressed her gratitude on behalf of the traders, stating that such initiatives bring much-needed relief to those affected by urban development projects.

She extended her prayers for Governor Makinde’s continued success in his administration, emphasizing the lasting impact of his actions on the welfare of the people.

As the displaced traders prepare to transition into their new stalls, the enduring support from the state government serves as a beacon of hope for their future endeavors.

Oyo Lawmaker Abiodun Babalola Calls For Regulation Of Real Estate Agents’ Activities In Oyo State

Hon Abiodun Babalola Calls For Regulation Of Real Estate Agents’ Activities In Oyo State.

The lawmaker representing Ibadan Northeast Constituency 1 at the State House of Assembly, Hon Abiodun Babalola called on the Oyo State Government to embark on the regulation of activities of Estate Agents

The lawmakers who frowned at the antics of the real estate agents who duped unsuspecting residents called for decisive action in tackling the menace.

The lawmaker who co-sponsored a motion during plenary on Tuesday, titled , Need To Regulate Activities of Estate Agents to Safeguard Unsuspecting Customers Against Fraud and Exploitation in The State.”

According to the motion, “fraudulent activities of fake real estate agents and seemingly licensed developers against accommodation seekers are a rife menace in Oyo State. Most of these fake real estate actors deploy various designs ranging from fake or false advertisement of properties upon which they have no title or authority to deal, to disappearing into elusive air after receiving rental and allied funds.

“This ugly trend led to widespread outcry which was mostly heard by security agencies. There are instances when a single agent will fraud three or more potential tenants on a property that is not in his custody.

On 8th October, 2021, a Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 31-year-old real estate agent, Sunday Ikoni, to five years imprisonment for defrauding nine accommodation seekers of N3.9 million.

“The convict was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on fraud, stealing, obtaining money under false pretense and unlawful conversion, to which he pleaded guilty.

On 22nd September, 2024 the Oyo State Police Command paraded a 60-year-old real estate agent, Adeyemi Isaac, who had been posing as a serving Commissioner of Police and, on another occasion, as an Assistant Inspector General of Police. The Monitoring Unit of the Command initiated discreet human intelligence gathering, which eventually led to his arrest at his hideout in Oyo town.

Further Note that the house agents in Oyo are in the habit of collecting fees such as registration fees, Agency fees, Agreement fees, Caution fees, Legal fees, and Inspection fees among several others. All these charges are rather too exploitative hence the issue of real estate needs intervention by the state government, there is a need to curtail this menace by the Oyo State government. The need for the establishment of a Real Estate Regulatory Authority to eliminate the activities of impostors, fraudsters, and unaccredited real estate agents who adopt sharp practices is not negotiable. It is hoped that the regulation will encourage and improve private investment in the real estate sector in Oyo State and boost the internally generated revenue of the state.

“Observe that the Government has the responsibility to protect its subjects against financial abuse while agents hide under solving housing problems for the potential tenants.

I did not take part in killing Chief Bola Ige… - Sunday Igboho debunks allegations by Aare Gani Adams

In the voice note released by Aare Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo, said things that attacked my character.

He said a lot of wrong and bad things against me. He mentioned the names of the Nigeria President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and some other notable persons in Yoruba land.

In the said note, Aare Gani Adams said I was involved in the killing of the late Chief Bola Ige, SAN. Everyone will still remember the circumstances of the death of Chief Bola Ige who was the Minister of Justice at the time he was brutally murdered.

It goes without saying that no one or evidence has ever connected me to his death until this frivolities, malicious and highly scandalous by Aare Gani Adams.

I want to categorically state that I knew nothing about the killing and death of Chief Bola Ige. Chief Bola Ige died in Ibadan on 23 December 2001 and by newspaper and police reports, one Fryo was charged with the murder.

In that year, I was engaged in the settlement of Ife-Modakeke war. I can also remember that it was the same year Aare Gani Adams was imprisoned in Lagos when he was charged with murder and public disturbance arising out of inter-communal violence in Lagos in 2002, and the law firm of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi represented and got bail for him at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos.

I challenge Gani Adams to come forward and prove his assertions.

He claimed one Tayo Ayinde gave me money at his Ikeja Hotel on behalf of Asiwaju Bola Hammed Tinubu, who is now the Nigeria President.

I want to state that I did not go to any hotel in Lagos State to collect money from anyone relating to Asiwaju Bola Hamed Tinubu since he became the President.

Unlike what Gani Adams’ said in his voice note, I was never charged to court for murder, nor did I kill anyone to warrant my being charged to court.

The voice note showed the mind that has serious malice against my personality. It is on record that despite my respect for his position as Oyo Chief, the media is full of many bad things he said about me in the past.

Finally, i need not remind the Omoluabi Yoruba that i have the same tribal marks on my face as the late Alafin Adeyemi, Omo Oba ni mi.

I am not contesting Aare Gani Adams position.

Nje asiko kò ti ito fun Aare lati dagunro. Yoruba Nation needs unity at this dangerous moment, not ote ati Ilara.

I leave this allegation to the court of public opinion. Even though my initial reaction was to sue him, but i was advised to take it as Iti Ogede ti kose yo Ada si ni asiko ti Ile Yoruba wa ninu Ewu.

Thank you for your time.

Signed:

Chief Sunday Adeyemo (a.k.a Igboho Oosa)

Shooting Stars 2-0 Remo Stars: Pyagbara's Brace Sinks Remo Stars

Shooting Stars 2-0 Remo Stars: Pyagbara's Brace Sinks Remo Stars

Christian Pyagbara hit the target twice, once in each half to condemn Remo Stars of Ikenne to a 2-0 defeat in the hands of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, in a Matchday 26 fixture.

Under the floodlight, in an electrifying atmosphere, the Oluyole Warriors emerged the best of the Stars in the South West derby, played at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex.

Coming to Ibadan with a bragging right, having been undefeated by the Ibadan soccer lords in any league match, the Sky Blue Stars met more than what they bargained for as 3SC, backed by a huge number of their backers, showed sheer determination and the zeal to end the winless streak against the visitors.

Pyagbara fired the Oluyole Warriors to an early lead, scoring the opener in the 15th minute, with right back, Muritala Taiye providing the assist.

The coach Gbenga Ogunbote tutored lads, held on to the one nil lead till the end of the first half.

Remo Stars tried to change the tide of the game in their favour in the second half, but couldn't break the defense line of the hosts, ably marshalled by the quartet of Aniyikaye Adeleye, Adelowo Gbolagade, Ehibe Victor and Muritala Taiye, while goalkeeper Okemute Odah, complemented the efforts of his backline.

Remo Stars were reduced to ten men, as Sikiru Alimi was sent off, afetr collecting a second yellow card.

Pyagbara would later compound the woes of the coach Gbenga Ogunmodede' tutored team in the 78 minute, as he capitalised on a slip by goalkeeper Charles Tambe, who failed to deal with the ball, to grab his second goal of the day and ultimately seal a famous win for the Oluyole Warriors

The win makes it three consecutive victories and six matches without defeat for Shooting Stars, who have also kept four clean sheets in a row on their home ground.

The Oluyole Warriors, who have thus jumped to the sixth position on the log with 40 points from 26 matches, will hope to continue with their good run when they face Niger Tornadoes on Friday, in a Matchday 27 fixture billed for the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

OPINION: The Ibadan Obaship and Its Uniqueness || by Asoju Odo Alawode Rahmon

OPINION: The Ibadan Obaship and Its Uniqueness || by Asoju Odo Alawode Rahmon

As an indigene of the ancient city of Ibadan, hailing from the Atipe-Looyin Compound and Badeku Village in Ona Ara Local Government, I feel compelled to shed light on the uniqueness of the chieftaincy and Obaship tradition of Ibadanland, amidst calls for a review.

Every system has its merits and demerits, and the Ibadan Obaship system is no exception. One notable aspect of this system is the advanced age at which kings typically ascend the throne, often resulting in relatively short reigns. While some criticize this aspect, I believe there are compelling reasons why this system is indeed beautiful:

1. Predictability of succession: The Ibadan Obaship system operates on two lines—the Ọ̀tún (civil line) and the Balógun (military line). This structured succession ensures clarity and continuity, as the next king is already known based on the rotation between the lines.

2. Rigorous grooming process: Each Olúbàdàn undergoes a thorough grooming process steeped in tradition and heritage. From the Mọ́gàjí stage to ascending the throne, individuals are immersed in the customs and values of Ibadanland, fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of their role.

3. Inclusive eligibility: Unlike some other traditional systems, the Ibadan Obaship is open to all true indigenes of Ibadan, regardless of lineage. This inclusivity ensures that the throne is accessible to a wide range of individuals, promoting diversity and representation.

4. Stability and accountability: The advanced age and extensive grooming process of Olúbàdàns contribute to a sense of stability and wisdom in leadership. This reduces the likelihood of misbehavior or desecration of the throne, as incumbents are aware of their limited time and the importance of upholding tradition.

5. Rotation of leadership: The rotational nature of the Obaship ensures that leadership opportunities are distributed among different individuals and compounds, fostering a sense of equity and participation in governance.

While it is true that Olúbàdàns do not reign for long compared to some other Yoruba kingdoms, the benefits of the Ibadan Obaship system far outweigh this drawback. It is a system rooted in tradition, inclusivity, and stability, contributing to the rich cultural heritage and development of Ibadanland.
