Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao Akala, Member House of Representatives representing Ogbomosho North, South and Orire Federal constituency moved a petition on behalf of Mr. Adebayo Olaide, a native of Ogbomoso, Oyo State on the floor of the House yesterday.
Mr. Adebayo was brutalized by the men of the Nigerian police force, Oyo State Command on the 25th of June, 2009, at Ayegbayun village, near Odo Oba, Ogooluwa L.G in Ibadan. This unfortunate incident led to a loss of sight in his left eye and bodily harm to his person.
In suit no: M/554/2011, between Mr. Adebayo Olaide v. Inspector General of Police and four others, and Appeal No CA/1244/2013 between the Inspector General of Police and four others v. Mr. Adebayo Olaide; the courts unanimously delivered judgment in favor of Mr. Adebayo Olaide. But quite disturbingly, Mr. Olaide has neither got justice nor compensation for the assault meted out to him.
It is disheartening that Mr. Olaide has continued to live with this disability for the past 13 years due to the unprofessional attitude of police officers employed to protect Nigerians. In addition, the noncompliance of the court orders is disrespectful and unacceptable.
As a Lawmaker, invested in justice and effective implementation of the law, I called on the House to wade into this case, by ensuring that the NPF respects court orders. While this may not restore Mr. Olaide’s sight, it is my belief that the award will go a long way in ensuring that he gets the justice that he deserves, while also setting precedence for like matters in the future.
