UNVEILING THE QUINTESSENTIAL COACH WHO TRAINED THE THREE WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONS THAT REPRESENTED NIGERIA AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN BIRMINGHAM.

Kehinde Ayodabo, an ex- weightlifting champion, a focused, goal oriented  and a distinguished gentleman, joined the service of the Oyo State Sports Council on January 1st, 1989.
He is popularly known and addressed as Coach Kenny by his contemporaries and athletes at the Lekan Salami Sports, Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
This humble and respectful coach stands out amongst his contemporaries for so many obvious reasons.
(i) His ingenuity and proficiency as a resolute and determined weightlifting Coach.
(ii) His gentility, meekness and forthrightness
(iii) His deligence and commitments to duty coupled with his cordial working relationship with all the stakeholders in the stadium.
Coach Ayodabo, the man who passionately trained the three commonwealth Champions for almost a decade   before they eventually represented Oyo State at the Birmingham 2022. The Chief Weightlifting Coach trained the trio of Rafiat Folashade Lawal (Gold medalist), Liadi Taiwo (Silver medalist) and Osijo Mary (Bronze medalist). Coach Kenny hails from Ode Remo, in Ogun State of Nigeria. He was born into the family of Mr and Mrs Ayodabo, the father was an alternative Medical Practitioner and the mother, a succesful  and proficient caterer.
Coach Kenny studied Physical and Health Education at the Della College of Education, Ibadan, a tertiary institution affiliated to the Federal College of Education, Special, Oyo.
Subsequently, he enrolled for the Advance Coaching Certificate Course at the National Institute of Sports, Lagos.
While growing up during his yore days, the young "Kenny"  ventured into the world of Sports in 1984. He retorted,"" I have passion for watching sporting activities on the television. On  a fateful day, I watched Los Angeles Olympic Games in Weightlifting. I was highly fascinated to see the dexterity of the Weightlifting Champions like OLIVER Orok and Iron  Bar Bassey. I was highly impressed and the spirit of "I can do it" came upon me and I suddenly developed insatiable appetite for Weightlifting".
In his avowed determination to achieve his ambition of becoming a successful weightlifter he decided to join the Weightlifters during one of their training sessions at the liberty Stadium, Oke Ado, Ibadan. He remarked further that "I was excited when I carried a set of weight for the first time. I had an instinct in me that propelled me to intensify my efforts to achieve greater heights".
My indefatigable and dexterous Coach, Mr Gabriel Jenkanwo, a.k.a "Baba jenkins" took me to Ilorin.  Township Stadium,  Ilorin , Kwara State. during the National Sports Festival in 1985. I could not participate actively because I was a MINOR. My coach allowed me to participate through demonstrations. To the constemation of the spectators at the Stadium , I was able to conveniently carried 40kg which attracted a very loud ovation. My action pictures were featured in  the National Dailies and I was celebrated beyond imaginations.
My father "s friend and associates informed him of my exploits, but my father reprimanded me instead of praises and encomiums.. "He annoyingly reported my coach at the police station, he was arrested and interrogated. His father believed that Weightlifting will deprive him the opportunity to forge ahead in his academic pursuits. But his countenance later changed and he gave his consent for "Kenny" to continue with Weightlifting training sessions.
Coach Kenny has an impressive track record of achievements in Weightlifting.
(1) National Sports Festival (1988). He represented Oyo State and won Silver Medal .In recognition of his excellent performance, the Federal Government offered him a scholarship to complement  his unique and brilliant performance as "Best Technique of the Year"
(2) National Weightlifting Championship, Lagos 1989- He won GOLD Medal
(3) National Sports Festival, Bauchi (1991) He won one Gold Medal, One Silver Medal.
(4) 1992. He was invited to the camp for the preparation for African Championship in Egypt. He won 2 Silver Medals, one Bronze Medal
(5) 1994 National African Championship held in Cape Town, South Africa. He won 3 Silver Medals
Regrettably, he sustained injury on his elbow. He could not participate at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada. The fracture of his left hand devastated his health so much. He could not participate in sporting activities for four consecutive years.
While responding to the question "what is your experience in coaching the three commonwealth champions?". "The trio of Rafiat Lawal , Liadi Taiwo and Osijo are responsible, respectful, patient and observant athletes. To the best of my knowledge, they all have the potentials and innate qualities to excel in all competitions, including Olympic Games".
Coach Kenny remarked that the success they have recorded at the Commonwealth Games did not come as a surprise.considering their numerous achievements and feats in the previous tournaments, stressing that he is very proud of the prodigies  for making exploits. He is optimistic that the three of them will qualify for the Olympic games in the foreseeable future.
Coach Kenny has a a cordial working relationship with all the workers in the Oyo State Sports, Council, Ibadan.  He has all the characteristics of a good coach . He is positive, enthusiastic, supportive, trusting, focused , goal oriented, knowledgeable, observant, respectful, patient and a clear communicator. Kudos to the coach of COACHEES
